Pune is CotW!!! edit

Hey there Upamanyu, just wanted to point out that Pune is Collaboration of the Week, it's a good time to make it shine, and you seem to have a good interest in the article! If it isn't improved soon we'll probably have to remove it from the Star Nominations page, it definitely isn't a Star yet... (WT-en) Cacahuate 08:03, 5 January 2007 (EST)

Don't worry too much about what everyone said about that image. We all make mistakes, and the thing to do after we make mistakes is to fix them and carry on as before. You've been very helpful around here, so keep it up! I notice you're from New Delhi, that article is only at useful status, so it would be really great if you could try and bring that up to at least guide status! -- (WT-en) Tim 07:46, 24 January 2007 (EST)

I've gone ahead and added the districts that you mentioned. Feel free to have a go at trying to shift stuff over if you get the time. I'm also in talks with someone from WikiPedia who made this map to see if I can get a copy of it in .svg so I can edit it to whichever districts we decide to use. I'll let you know when I get a reply. -- (WT-en) Tim 10:20, 24 January 2007 (EST)

Hi Upamanyuwikivoyage - I'm sure that you have learned from your error and understand why people were angry with you. Anyway, let's let bygones be bygones. As Tim said, if you could help with the Delhi article that would be great. However, if you find Delhi too difficult, how about looking at Shimla? It is a very popular place for tourists, but all the listings are really thin. When I last there, I stayed at the YMCA, but I don't remember the names of the restaurants or other hotels, so can't complete sections. However, I'm sure you must have visited there with your family, so if you could add some useful information, perhaps with your parents' help, it would be great. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 10:14, 24 January 2007 (EST)

Shimla edit

Yeah, I remember the Cecil Oberoi. It's a big hotel with a great view, right? Anyway, just do the best you can, but I think Tim is going to keep you busy with Delhi for a while, so maybe just help with that first. (WT-en) WindHorse 10:25, 24 January 2007 (EST)

I'll find time to work on both Delhi and Shimla. I found my travel diary in my cupboard and there's a fair bit of info. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 03:45, 25 January 2007 (EST)

Great. I look forward to using the information on my next visit to those places. (WT-en) WindHorse 11:15, 25 January 2007 (EST)

Thanks for adding the listings to the Shimla article. They are really useful - though remember that because of copyright restrictions we cannot copy the text from another source, but have to write everything in our own words. Also, I have made a few edits to the listings you made (take take a look). By the way, there is a discussion on the Delhi Talk page about how to set up the districts. Can you offer any help? I've been to Delhi many times, but I've never taken much notice about the district names, so I'm afraid I cannot help. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 07:47, 26 January 2007 (EST) Ps. Take a look at Colin's comments below, and try to do that as quickly as possible so that we can avoid possible copyright problems - ok?
Thanks for the edit to the monastery, but Nyingma is a school of Tibetan Buddhist, not a style of building - anyway, it was a good idea. (WT-en) WindHorse 08:02, 26 January 2007 (EST)
Hey, man, are you copying some of the edits on the Shimla article from a brochure??? As I said above, we have to write aaaaaaaaall our contributions in our words. What's your answer??? (WT-en) WindHorse 08:20, 26 January 2007 (EST)

Here's my answer - I AM NOT USING ANY BROCHURE. I'm doing random googling to find out the websites and opening hours. And the reviews are from my own travel diary. Don't worry. P.S. I am consulting the web to find out opening hours, entry prices and items on the menu which is fine. All the reviews which I am using are being re-formatted which is within wikivoyage conventions. Upamanyuwikivoyage 09:19, 26 January 2007 (EST)

OK, but many of the reviews still sound very brochure-like - for example...Admire the Victorian Architecture, for The Mall retains much of its Raj-era charm....The central area of the mall, flanked by its half-timbered buildings, has always been, and remains its most fahionable area. Home to a profusion of restaurants... Don't you agree? If you re-format, you have do more than just change a few words, it has to be re-written. Anyway, I'm just letting you know, because if anyone finds that you have copied something, then definitely you'll banned, and there is nothing I can do about it. Take it easy (WT-en) WindHorse 09:32, 26 January 2007 (EST)

Listen, here's the original text. I have re-formatted it. The Mall in Shimla is a classic example of Victorian Architecture. The half-timbered buildings in the central section of The Mall retain their Raj-era charm. This area is the poshest neighbourhood in the city, and houses a multitude of stylish restaurants, art galleries and shopping plazas. P.S. Just gloss over the spellings, I tend to use British spellings which apparently isn't the wikivoyage norm. I'm Done with See, Do, Eat & Drink I'll complete the Sleep Listings today evening, that is 12.30 GMT. And The Get Around is blank, Get In is too sparse. Upamanyuwikivoyage 22:18, 26 January 2007 (EST)

Thanks for reporting back. To be honest I'm not 100% sure of the rules concerning reformatting, but what you have written does seem far enough from the original for it not to contravene copyright laws. Let's see if anyone else can offer a more in depth appraisal (I'll add the dialogue to the Shimla Talk page). Anyway, the Shimla does look much better. Thanks for your efforts. (WT-en) WindHorse 04:10, 27 January 2007 (EST)

I'd agree - the original and "rewritten" text seem far too similar to me. It's not enough to just change a few words in a sentence; if you find a description of a place that is four sentences long and you simply copy those four sentences and shuffle a few words it's still copying. My advice would be if you can't write clearly original work, using external sites as references only, then it's better to wait for others to make original contributions. In the mean time add your own contributions for places you are familiar with! -- (WT-en) Ryan 04:15, 27 January 2007 (EST)
Hey Upamanyuwikivoyage - Based on my own feelings and Ryan's input, I think that the Shimla text needs to be written - which I'll do. Then, in the future, please write any contributions in your words. Don't worry that the grammar is not 100% correct. It will get cleaned up at some point. OK? Anyway, keep going. You are doing fine, and it is good that you checking back with us about your contributions. In that way, we can avoid future problems. (WT-en) WindHorse 04:24, 27 January 2007 (EST)

On fixing errors edit

If you truely plan on changing your ways, then you need to take an important step. You need to tell us about everything you have copied from other sites. Please review your contributions to Wikivoyage and let us know if any other contributions -- whether photos or text -- were taken from other sites. -- (WT-en) Colin 22:30, 25 January 2007 (EST)

Thirteen edit

Wow - you are smart. Are you sure you only 13? WindHorse 21:27, 30 January 2007 (EST) Ps. Image looks good. Thanks. You don't believe that I'm 13, look in your talk page - I've given the email IDs of some of my classmates, just email them and ask.(i'd forgotten to sign my name). Upamanyuwikivoyage 02:54, 31 January 2007 (EST)

I wasn't doubting you, just complimenting you. You seem so smart for only 13. By the way, the information you have added looks great, though be careful not add too much academic stuff. Remember this is a guide not an encyclopedia like Wikipedia. Also, don't worry about writing in your own words. Even if there are mistakes in the grammar, it is better to do this than copy another text. OK? (WT-en) WindHorse 04:31, 31 January 2007 (EST)

Hey wh, what's your name?? Er, windhorse, what's your real name and where are you from?? I'd still prefer calling you windhorse, I like the name. Upamanyuwikivoyage 11:18, 31 January 2007 (EST)

Do you remember Star Wars? Well, I am Chewbacca's cousin. We look alike and both come from the planet Kashyyyk. Ha Ha. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 11:23, 1 February 2007 (EST)

New language versions edit

wts:How to start a new language version (WT-en) Jpatokal 05:49, 2 February 2007 (EST)

Start the Expedition(s) and sign your name up top. Try to recruit more people. Wait until you have 5 people. (WT-en) Jpatokal 09:53, 2 February 2007 (EST)

Sleazy in Shimla edit

Were you looking for some other word when you wrote "A good place to enjoy tea or a quiet drink in a sleazy atmosphere." to describe the bar at the Oberoi in Shimla? Great work on the article by the way. I am nominating it for DotM. (Windhorse has already done that!) — (WT-en) Ravikiran 07:40, 5 February 2007 (EST)

Actually, I had tea (well, coffee actually) at the Oberoi in Shimla, and I would say that elegant was perhaps a more appropriate description of the Lobby Lounge than trendy, but anyway it's up to you. Trendy is also ok. (WT-en) WindHorse 08:29, 5 February 2007 (EST)

Hotels in Mumbai edit

I'd recommend you stay in Santa cruz, Khar or Juhu. Andheri is farther away and I'd expect that hotels there are more expensive because it's close to a lot of software cos. I had opportunity to drive to the Santa cruz area today and I noticed that there were a lot of budget-type hotels between the Western Express highway and the railway station - that is a convenient location. In particular, I noticed Hotel Airlines international (listed on the page as having a decent range). It is very close to the Western express highway, close to the airport and is in a decent locality. I don't know how it is inside, but has some decent reviews. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 08:16, 15 February 2007 (EST)

Yes it is very close to the santa cruz station. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 01:24, 16 February 2007 (EST)

Delhi to Jo'burg edit

Saw your comment on Ravikiran's page, I flew from Jo'burg to Delhi well, over a year ago now, on Emirates, which I'm pretty sure still flies that route via Dubai  :) (WT-en) - Cacahuate 14:34, 27 February 2007 (EST)

p.s... http://www.sidestep.com is sometimes a pretty good site, checks lots of different airlines and booking sites and often shows competitive prices... (WT-en) - Cacahuate 14:35, 27 February 2007 (EST)

Shimla edit

Hi young man, regarding Shimla, no I have only been there once, but I stayed for some time and really enjoyed my time there. It is a really pleasant little town and a good base for traveling on to Manali, Kullu and Dharamsala. As for the timetable, your welcome. Actually, you did all the hard work. I'm just filling in a few gaps. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 11:02, 28 February 2007 (EST)
