Nearby locations layer

I am not really sure if this layer should be treated as an external site. Of course you use data from the WMF tools server like https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikivoyage/w/data/de-articles.js but this is a WMF website, too.

Some questions:

• Is it possible to generate a link like <maplink> with the already activated nearby-locations layer?
• The presentation of local- and nearby-locations popups differs. In local-locations popups description is performed as a bold title, in nearby locations popups as a figure caption below the image. The popups have no close button. Clicking on the marker the popup will always be (re)opened but never closed. You cannot close it by clicking on the marker. The only way to close it is to click on the map but on neither the marker nor the popup. See also Task T140213.
