The iconic Oak Alley Plantation
  • 1 Laura Plantation, 2247 Highway 18, +1 225-265-7690, toll-free: +1 888-799-7690, . Respected for the quality of its tour, and it uniqueness in that it was run by women, which was virtually unheard of at the time.
  • 2 Oak Alley Plantation, 3645 Highway 18 (Great River Road), +1 225-265-2151, toll-free: +1 800-44ALLEY (25539), fax: +1 225-265-7035. Well known for its beautiful grounds, stunning alley of 300-year-old oak trees, and tour of its historic mansion. Tours include visits to reconstructed slave cabins.
  • 3 St. Joseph Plantation, 3535 Highway 18, +1 225-265-4078. Unique in that it is still a working sugar cane plantation, and tours are mostly given by members of the family, who tell very personal stories.
  • 4 Whitney Plantation, 5099 Louisiana Highway 18, Wallace, +1 225 265-3300. M W-Sa 9:30AM-4:30PM; closed Sundays and major holidays. The only plantation museum (and perhaps the only museum in North America) with a focus on slavery. Originally known as “Habitation Haydel”, this sugar cane plantation intertwined the lives of German immigrant owners and African-American slaves. Part museum, part art gallery, part living history, visitors report that the Whitney engaged them with a painful but central part of American history, and left them changed. The main house is on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours, hourly from 10AM to 3PM, are included with admission. $22; $15 for students, seniors, active military, and locals; children under 12 free with adult admission.
