September-December 2011 - Update Country See and Do Sections
editSee Project:Country surgeon Expedition#Goals to get started helping with this collaboration!
A while ago it was agreed upon that countries need "See" and "Do" sections. Now however, we have many country articles with loads of information but nothing or near nothing in their "See" and/or "Do" sections. Like some of the other current nominations, this would require a little research, BUT the countries are not at all untraveled nations. Look at France, Japan, Brazil, Spain, South Africa, etc. Such a weak section moves countries like South Korea from guide status to outline status (although it is still listed as a guide). It's silly to lower their statuses when we could add the information. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 04:31, 20 December 2009 (EST)
- I think this could indeed be a useful CotM—it's not too hard to identify a country's main attractions and come up with a paragraph or two to describe/link them. I would add, though, that South Korea would still be at outline status until the country's major cities and other destinations are all at usable status or better ;) --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:47, 20 December 2009 (EST)
- Support. A good list of tasks, but I think we should make a list of some exact countries (or continents maybe), so we have better focus of which are done and which still have to be done.
- Also I think we could include that all countries must have a list of nine cities and nine 'other destinations'. Some of those are quite messed up (just look at Italy, France, Germany, etc.) (WT-en) globe-trotter 12:32, 3 January 2010 (EST)
- Support. Maybe we should make a table with countries in rows and tasks in colomns to keep track of our progress. (WT-en) ClausHansen 13:53, 3 January 2010 (EST)
- Will do. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 17:45, 23 August 2011 (EDT)
- And have now done at User:(WT-en) Peterfitzgerald/Sandbox. I'm not sure if I should move this to here? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:40, 23 August 2011 (EDT)
- I say that would be a good move. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:19, 24 August 2011 (EDT)
Great to see this moving, anyone knowing of a country articles with well developed see and do sections to be used as inspiration?, --(WT-en) ClausHansen 04:35, 24 August 2011 (EDT)
- I can join the collaboration by writing Thailand. As inspiration, I believe the United States of America is pretty good. I have written the Western Netherlands See and Do sections, which I think also turned out decent. Although its officially a region, the area spans pretty much everything the average tourist to the Netherlands would visit, so is complete in a sense. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 11:33, 24 August 2011 (EDT)
- USA is probably the most evolved we have, but like most of that article, it verges on being too long I think. Australia is also a good example.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:51, 24 August 2011 (EDT)
- The U.S. "Do" section is horrible; the "See" section may go a little too long on details but I think it's a good overview in general. (WT-en) LtPowers 13:40, 24 August 2011 (EDT)
- I wrote Iraq#See with the intention of it being something of a model for country articles that we are not realistically going to fill up like we have USA. It has links to all the most major attractions, without getting into details on each one (e.g., individual sights in Baghdad), and has a coherent narrative with an intro.
- Because of the size of this project, I'm very tempted to start a full-on expedition, and then feature it as the September CotM. I'm proposing it here. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:17, 24 August 2011 (EDT)
- Is this still on? --(WT-en) globe-trotter 12:51, 4 September 2011 (EDT)
- Yes! (Sorry, I was without internet for a week). See the new Project:Country surgeon Expedition, and lets get started! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:46, 6 September 2011 (EDT)
There was a little support on the talk page, and I think (hope) at least a few of the regulars have been here. I also think it's likely that casual visitors will have visited the falls.
Tasks:
- Niagara Falls (New York):
- Properly format listings. Add missing info and descriptions
- Organize "Eat" according to "Budget", "Mid-range", and "Splurge"
- Add pictures
- Niagara Falls (Ontario):
- Rewrite "Understand" section
- Properly format listings.
- Organize "Eat" according to "Budget", "Mid-range", and "Splurge"
- Write "Climate" information
These tasks are good for even a traveler unfamiliar with the area to be able to contribute. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 22:26, 3 June 2010 (EDT)
- Strongly support, and I'd be happy to help out as I've been to both sides numerous times. (WT-en) LtPowers 16:22, 28 June 2010 (EDT)
- Support --(WT-en) Tiagox2 07:17, 17 October 2010 (EDT)
- Both articles could benefit by mentioning something about whether Canadian/U.S. currency can be used in and around the borders and/or Niagara Falls, ON/NY. The NY-side article states the crossing toll accepts both currencies, but wondering how strict the currency rules are beyond this specific instance. Also, listing some places one can go to exchange currency might also be helpful to add. (WT-en) Zepppep 11:59, 6 April 2011 (EDT)
- I stand corrected about the usage of both currencies--the ON article states both can be used but the NY article does not.(WT-en) Zepppep 12:56, 6 April 2011 (EDT)
