Wuhan/Jiangxia

Jiangxia (江夏) is the southernmost and most sparsely populated of Wuhan's 13 districts. This largely rural area is home to several museums and scenic areas.

Most of Jiangxia District still consists of the rural area south of the Wuhan city center. Jingxia has its own urban core, which is a large residential area called Zhifang (纸坊) some 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of Wuhan proper.

• 1 Baiyun Cave Scenic Area (白云洞景区), Jiangxia District (江夏区) (take bus no. j2 from the bus stop on Wenhua Avenue, just outside Exit E of Tanxinpei Park Metro Station on Line 7; get off at one of the last stops), ☏ +86 27 88101287. 08:00-17:30. Features a network of kart caves that stretches for a distance of around 300 metres. It is named after Baiyun Cave, which is the largest of the caves. Outside the caves is a military museum, which has an extensive collection of old military hardware on display. ¥20. (updated Mar 2020)
• 2 Canglong Island National Wetland Park (藏龙岛国家湿地公园), 2 Lingjie Road, Jiangxia District (江夏区灵杰路2号) (the nearest bus stop is Limiao Road & the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts Canglong Island Campus (栗庙路美院藏龙岛校区), which is served by bus nos. 380, 758, 781, 4308 and yx758; you can catch most of these buses from the bus stop just outside Fozuling Station, the terminus of Line 2). Canglong Island is not an island but rather a peninsula on the eastern shores of Tangxun Lake, China's largest urban lake. The park is home to a number of rare birds and animals. • 3 Jiangxia Central Park (江夏中央大公园), Northwest corner of the intersection of Wenhua Avenue and Jinlong Road, Jiangxia District (江夏区文化大道与金龙大街交叉口西北角) (between Jiangxia Keting Station and Tanxinpei Park Station on Metro Line 7). Open all day. Opened in late 2019, this is one of Wuhan's newest and largest urban parks. The concept for the park was inspired by New York's Central Park. Free. (updated Mar 2020)
• 4 Jiangxia Museum (江夏区博物馆, 江夏博物馆), 269 Xingxin Street, Jiangxia District (江夏区兴新街269号) (about 1.2 km west of Zhifang Avenue Station on Metro Line 7; there is a bus stop just outside the museum named Xingxin Street & Xinnan Lane (兴新街新南巷), which is served by bus nos. j4 and j9), ☏ +86 27 87952056. 09:00-16:00 (slack season), 08:30-17:00 (peak season), closed on Mondays. A small museum with exhibitions on the history of Jiangxia District. The museum will eventually be moving to a new location on the south side of Jiangxia Central Park. Free. (updated Mar 2020)

Longquanshan Scenic Area

• 5 Longquanshan Scenic Area (龙泉山风景区, Mount Longquan Scenic Area), Longquan Township, Jiangxia District (江夏区龙泉乡) (bus 909 from Fozuling Metro Station (Line 2) to the Chutian Mingshan (楚天名山) bus stop, or a 16-km drive or bike ride across the city's new business area and rural suburbs), ☏ +86 27 81620543. 08:00-17:00. The resting place of 9 members of the local branch of the Ming Dynasty (starting with one of the sons of the first Ming Emperor), decorated with temples, pavilions, and 3 stele-bearing turtles (bixi), set in the countryside a few miles to the southeast of Wuhan, proudly described as Wuhan's answer to the Ming Tombs of Beijing. A trail leads to a hilltop tower, from which great views of the area could be seen if the visibility were better. ¥36. Some areas don't require payment. (updated Oct 2015)
• 6 Qinglongshan National Forest Park (青龙山国家森林公园, Mount Qinglong National Forest Park), Zhifang Street, Jiangxia District (江夏区纸坊大街) (take a metro train to Qinglongshan Ditiexiaozhen, the terminus of Line 7; the park is a short walk from the station), ☏ +86 27 81810234. Open all day. A large and fairly quiet nature park that doesn't get many tourists. Be prepared for long walks and bring your own food and water, especially if you're planning on hiking up the mountain. Free. (updated Mar 2020)
• 7 Wuhan Flower Expo Park (武汉花卉博览园), 江夏区五里界街道梁子湖大道 (Liangzihu Avenue, Wulijie Subdistrict, Jiangxia District) (at the intersection of Liangzihu Avenue and Huashen Avenue; the nearest bus stop is the Liangzihu Avenue & Flower Expo Park (梁子湖大道花博园), which is served by bus no. 920; you would probably have to catch two buses. One option would be to catch bus no. 915 from the Minzu Avenue & Optics Valley Square (民族道道光谷广场) bus stop just south of the Optics Valley Square Metro Station on Line 2, then change to bus no. 920 when you get to Zhongzhou Road & Zhongzhou Village (中洲路中洲村)), ☏ +86 27 89967528, +86 13607101927, whhhbly@163.com. Open all day. Features a massive flower plantation covering an area of around 3500 mu (about 233 hectares). The park may be visited at any time of the year, but is probably best visited during the annual Wuhan Spring Festival Flower Fair. Entry to the park is free. (updated Mar 2020)

Zhongshan Warship Museum

• 8 Zhongshan Warship Museum (武汉市中山舰博物馆), 1 Zhongshan Jian Road, Jinkou Subdistrict (江夏区金口街中山舰路特1号) (bus routes 910 and 919; you can catch bus no. 919 from the bus stop outside Tanxinpei Park Station on Metro Line 7), ☏ +86 27 81561913. Tu-Su and public holidays 09:00-17:00; entrance closes at 16:00. This museum, near the right bank of the Yangtze in the far southwestern suburbs of Wuhan, commemorates a naval battle that happened here, hundreds of miles from the sea, in October 1938. Sunk by the Japanese aviation - just three years before the Pearl Harbor attack on the US fleet - the Chinese warship Zhongshan was raised from the bottom of the Yangzte in 1997, restored, and is now displayed in this museum's main hall. Adjacent are exhibits on the history of the ship, as well as the process of its lifting from the river bottom and its restoration. On the top of a hill across the small lake from the museum is a memorial to the 25 sailors, including the ship's captain, who found their watery grave in the Yangtze, far from their hometowns on Fujian's northern coast. The lake is surrounded by sculptures commemorating various aspects of the Battle of Wuhan in 1938, as well as of the city's eventual liberation after the surrender of Japan in 1945. Various other exhibits of military and patriotic nature, such as a sampling of People's Liberation Army's older weaponry, can be seen here as well. Free. (updated Mar 2018)
