Yanbu al Bahr (Arabic: ينبع), commonly known as Yanbu, is a city in the Hejaz on the western coast of Saudi Arabia, along the Red Sea. Yanbu al-Nakhl

Yanbu, literally "spring", is also known as Yambu or Yenbo.

It is part of the Medina Province and serves as a significant industrial and economic hub in the region. In 2022, it was home to more than 330,000 people. Many residents are foreign expatriates working in the oil refineries and petrochemical industry, mostly from Asia, but there are also large numbers from the Middle East, Europe, and North America.

Yanbu has three main districts which are located about 15 minutes drive by car away from each other:

• Yanbu Al-Bahr (the old town in the north),
• Yanbu Al-Nakhl (mostly farming villages),
• Yanbu Al-Sina'iya (the industrial city in the south),

and a major Red Sea port.

History

Yanbu has a long history that dates back to ancient times, with evidence of settlement in the region for thousands of years. Historically, it was a vital stop for caravans traveling between the Arabian Peninsula and the Mediterranean. The city gained prominence during the Islamic era as a trading center and a port for pilgrims heading to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

In the 20th century, Yanbu underwent significant development, particularly following the discovery of oil in the region. The establishment of industrial complexes in the late 1970s and 1980s transformed the city into a key player in Saudi Arabia's oil and petrochemical industries.

Geography

Yanbu is about 200 km (124 miles) northwest of Medina and 350 km (217 miles) southwest of Jeddah. The city boasts a coastal location along the Red Sea, providing it with beautiful beaches and natural marine resources. The surrounding landscape includes desert terrain and mountains, contributing to its unique geographical features.

• 1 Prince Abdul Mohsin Bin Abdulaziz Airport (IATA:YNB) (about 10 km from the city center). Saudia and Flynas airlines operate flights from Dammam, Jeddah, and Riyadh within Saudi Arabia.
