Hello Jpatokal! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

Please take a sec to look at our copyleft and policies and guidelines, but feel free to plunge forward and edit some pages. Scanning the Manual of style, especially the article templates, can give you a good idea of how we like articles formatted. If you need help, check out Project:Help, and if you need some info not on there, post a message in the travellers' pub.

Thanks for your contributions so far, especially Kuala Lumpur. However, you may want to have a look at our Small city article template and Big city article template to get an idea of the standard headings used in city articles and how (and why) these articles are set out in the way they are. -- (WT-en) Huttite 05:27, 3 May 2004 (EDT)

Wikivoyage uses American spelling - so "center" is correct. Please revert back to my changes --(WT-en) Nzpcmad 04:56, 7 May 2004 (EDT)

Spelling issues aside ;-), I have to say that your work on Singapore is fantastic! Really nicely done and usable! I'm going to use it as my new favorite example of a guide done right! Hope our Yankee spelling won't bug you too much-- feel free to write how it feels right and others will edit as needed-- one of the great things about a wiki! Looking forward to reading more! Official Greeters edit

I am just wondering if anybody has been designate the task of officially greeting new comers to wikivoyage. When I first started writing, Evan put a comment on my talk page about how great it was that I was doing Kosovo which was the last hook that got me committed to the project. Anyway, is there anyway to get a list of new people who have recently signed up for userid's (if this doesn't violate privacy rules)? I'm going to start following recent changes looking for people I think are new try and give them a few pointers (and express thanks) on their talk pages but its difficult to tell the difference between a new user and somebody who only contributes occasionally. Any ideas? (WT-en) Aburda 07:33, 12 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Images of people edit

Really great set of pictures you uploaded today! They look great.

One question I have is about some of the pictures of individual people, like Image:Nativity Monk.JPG, Image:Wedding Bride Watching.JPG, and Image:SpikedBlonde Kneeling.JPG. Publishing pictures of people is fraught with dangers, which is one of the reasons our Image use policy recommends against it. (I think the other reasons for recommending against pictures of people -- that is, that they're usually superfluous -- don't apply here. The people are the subject of the photo, not just in the way.)

They look like candid shots, and if you didn't get model releases from them, either verbal or written, they may violate the privacy rights of the subject and can't be published. If you could put some kind of note on the Image: pages just saying that you've cleared the privacy rights, it'd be great. OK, sure, you have legally warranted this in the license, but it'll make me more comfortable if I know you know about the issues. --(WT-en) Evan 17:42, 14 Aug 2004 (EDT)

Destination of the Month - September 2004 edit

That is a really good article; must add it to my list of places to see. -- (WT-en) Chris j wood 11:28, 1 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Jing'an edit

It's now an orphan page again. Please either fix or revert. Thanks. --(WT-en) Nzpcmad 15:28, 14 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Full Moons edit

Could we move the extlink on Ko Pha Ngan into the text of the description of the full moon parties? Or is there a reason why it really ought to stand alone by itself at the end of the article? -- (WT-en) Colin 02:53, 20 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Flylc.com edit

Why did you delete my contribution written this morning in the Discount Airlines Page ? Here was my text :

A new site: FlyLC.com is helping you to find and book cheap flights in Europe. All routes and low fare airlines are on just one interactive page!

We don't generally link to external sites, especially commercial ones. See Project:External_links. (WT-en) Jpatokal 11:15, 30 Sep 2004 (EDT)

This site is NOT a commercial site ! Did you write to the webmaster to get some more information before deciding to delete my contribution ?

Actually whether or not something is commercial has absolutely nothing to do with it. There has been for some months a lengthly discussion about what sorts of external links to allow and what sorts to not allow, but in fact most of the external links on Wikivoyage which fall inside of whatever rules we might adopt are in fact to commercial sites. I don't suppose that helps here. Oh well.
Meanwhile, I think it would make more sense to exclude this fairly nifty little tool on the grounds that we want to have the info here, and not linked to. -- (WT-en) Mark 16:09, 30 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Spam edit

Thanks for removing that spam! --(WT-en) Nzpcmad 16:19, 30 Sep 2004 (EDT)

Spiegel edit

Thank you for the good idea. I have read the article an sent an e-mail to the redaction. How did you know that the "Traveler's Pub" is "Stammtisch" in German? -- (WT-en) Hansm 11:06, 2004 Oct 8 (EDT)

Death to edit

Hey, I'm going to sleep right now, but it looks like our Favorite Spammer is getting frustrated and persistent. If you have the time to keep an eye on things now and then, maybe the frustration will assist in evicting him permanently. -- (WT-en) Colin 03:44, 9 Oct 2004 (EDT)

Took me 26 minutes, not 60 seconds - I was geeking out with a friend, left about when the spammer struck, got home, booted my laptop, saw the garbage, and promptly reverted it. -(WT-en) phma 03:13, 10 Oct 2004 (EDT)

So, I've implemented a fairly simple spam blocker -- see Project:10 October 2004 for rough details. Your input very welcome. --(WT-en) Evan 22:45, 10 Oct 2004 (EDT)

Hi Jpatokal,

I wonder whether you want to update the Africa section of the mainpage and add the Kruger National Park to it. This article has a map, several pictures and lots of text whereas the other articles from the mainpage in the Africa section are nice, but some of them have a lot of empty sections.

South Africa, Morocco, Mozambique, Cote d'Ivoire, Namibia, more...

Lets move on Africa needs a lot more work.

Script edit

You wrote that in awk? That's just wrong man. -- (WT-en) Colin 15:56, 27 Oct 2004 (EDT)

Maybe it's possible to write M$ Word makros doing the same >8~|. anyway, I'm not sure if it is a good idea to publish this scripts, especially those who are able to edit pages. Imagine, our chinese friend or some stupid script kid find out what parts need to be changed and a usefull script turns into a spamming tool. Of course, these scripts are no esotheric knowlage, but those who want to do some automatic vandalism should at least learn to read the man pages by themselves. -- (WT-en) Hansm 17:57, 2004 Oct 27 (EDT)
Respect my awktority! And the script only reads Wikivoyage pages, it doesn't change them, so it's not much use to a spammer. (WT-en) Jpatokal 22:39, 27 Oct 2004 (EDT)
Well, of course I do respect your awk scripting, althought I prefere Perl for jobs like that. I know, the script you have listed reads only. It's just that I wouldn't feel so comfortable if you also would publish the other scripts, i.e. steps 3 and 4, here. Let a possible spammer find out by himself how to submit an edited page to Wikivoyage. Finaly, let me say that the idea of using a script for the multilagnual statistics is excellent. It saves a lot of time and can do things more reliable than a human. I hope it was in your interest that I have protected the de:Project:NumberOfArticles on the German site. If not, let me know. -- (WT-en) Hansm 07:36, 2004 Oct 28 (EDT)
Uh, I think that the technique for submitting changes to Mediawiki software is pretty well known. Here's just one example: [1]. -- (WT-en) Mark 08:08, 28 Oct 2004 (EDT)
Yes, it seems so. Ok, then a new awk version can't do no more damage. -- (WT-en) InterLangBot 12:26, 28 Oct 2004 (EDT)

New Japanese users edit

Hey, so, I just wanted to note that there are a number of new Japanese users on Wikivoyage. They're from User:(WT-en) Ted's English class. I believe he's invited them to look at Wikivoyage as both an exercise in their English skills and as a way to give some "insider" information on Japanese destinations. Anyways, I wanted to let you know that they're on en: for a reason, and if you want to introduce them to the ja: expedition, you should probably take some time to explain why (and probably also let Ted know). --(WT-en) Evan 09:24, 28 Oct 2004 (EDT)

Evan, thanks for putting a note here. I probably should have done that! I hope they can add some local knowledge that is useful. Introducing them to the ja: expedition is a great idea, just not for me right now. I've got my "English teacher" hat on for now, so I'm supposed to be encouraging them to read and write in English. Once the term is over, I'll certainly try to help them get on the ja: expedition, but if anyone else wants to invite them right away, please do it. I think that would be an excellent idea. Please let me know if you think they are violating any of the Wikivoyage guidelines or if you feel we are misusing the site in any way. I realize that EFL education is not one of the goals of Wikivoyage, but hope it doesn't get in the way either. Thanks. (WT-en) Ted 00:51, 31 Oct 2004 (EDT)

IvyMedia edit

Hi,

I've seen you revert the IvyMedia edits to New York (city) several times, so I thought I'd point out that they've shown up on User talk:(WT-en) Evan asking for permission to add their site, and claiming that the two existing links are owned by one of the bus companies, whereas theirs is third party. (I've got no opinion on the matter, I just thought I'd point you at the discussion so you can say why you were reverting it.) -- (WT-en) Hypatia 18:12, 29 Oct 2004 (EDT)

Hi,

You can check these two links (one website was acquired from an independent party a few months ago).

We will wait for your consensus before making another attempt to change the content in this section. Or you may simply put our Chinatown Bus Search page there:

http://www.ivymedia.com/chinatownbus/

Thanks,

Jimmy

Thank you for the Link to German c't Magazin edit

Thank you for the link. Was that you, too, who has set the link on the German site? It was a good idea to tell important magazines about de:Wikivoyage. -- (WT-en) Hansm 11:22, 2004 Nov 1 (EST)

hindi edit

FYI: East and South India do not talk Hindi at all. And there is a dislike of Hindi in Tamil Nadu. So it may not be good for a traveller to try Hindi in the South -- Deepu

Thanks for you support on de: edit

Hi Jpatokal, I already have supposed that you know some German. You are realy a big help on de:, there are many contributors not very experienced in Wikivoyage, and finding the right structure or the right name for an article is often still a problem. But as you also will have seen, there are at the other hand some who already have understood the Wikivoyage way. Neverthless, I'm glad for every help coming from old hand Wikivoyageers. So, you are welcome on de: whenever you want and whenever you have time for us. -- (WT-en) Hansm 08:52, 2004 Nov 8 (EST)

Road signs edit

Re : your message about road signs on my talk page

I agree if someone makes a full page about road signs.

I only included a few signs which I think are essential to driving in France and are somewhat specific. Until all signs in EU are really standardized it may be a good idea to keep the info as such.

Admin edit

Hey, so, I posted your name to become an admin on Wikivoyage. The discussion is at Project:administrator nominations. Let us know if you're interested in the job. --(WT-en) Evan 17:07, 9 Nov 2004 (EST)

Listings or Spam edit

Hey, I'm wondering what criteria you're going by to decide which apartment listings are spam and which are legit. It seems like a pretty gray area to me, and I would like to know more about your thinking -- (WT-en) Mark 13:04, 12 Nov 2004 (EST)

Template policy edit

Hey, so, I finally started a page on using Mediawiki templates, and it'd be great to get your opinion on on the talk page. --(WT-en) Evan

Admin status edit

So, I set up admin status for you. Sadly, it happens just as I've ruined the interface for everyone, so the special buttons for deleting and protecting stuff are turned off. I think there are some other admin rights hidden around the interface that you may find. Just be careful and cautious when clicking stuff you don't recognize! Anyways, thanks for taking on the additional responsibility and welcome aboard. --(WT-en) Evan 23:30, 18 Nov 2004 (EST)

Food edit

Darn it! Now I'm hungry! -- (WT-en) Colin 02:12, 10 Dec 2004 (EST)

I generally try and avoid "proper" names for just that reason but sometimes I get it wrong! Sorry about that --(WT-en) Nzpcmad 16:13, 14 Dec 2004 (EST)

IP user and paris on the main page edit

Hey, I didn't want to step on your toes with that main page edit (actually we collided), but I figured that if we are going to practice what we preach about any user being able to edit anything we should try to keep the meaning of the IP user's edit. Especially since Paris won't be DOM shortly, so I put Belfast back and bumped Geneva instead.

Meanwhile I put some comments into every section which I hope will help explain what we are mean to do with the main page. Does it seem OK to you? -- (WT-en) Mark 02:29, 15 Dec 2004 (EST)

chipata/malawi tips edit

Hi. I just found the "my talk" tab and read your comment. What does your friend do in Chipata? Peace Corps? VSO? An agency which pays? My bet is your friend has all the tricks down about crossing the border, but I'm happy to tell you what I know. Would you like me to give you some pointers directly, or do you think I should try to include them in the Chipata and/or Malawi sections?

Hey, and p.s. -- how do I make a vertical bar, as in User:Willy|Willy? My keyboard doesn't have one on it. Every time, I must cut and paste.
