The games village, which includes the Afuze College of Physical and Health Education, was built in 1974 by the then military governor of Midwestern State, Brigadier-General Samuel Ogbemudia, and opened by General Yakubu Gowon. It is situated on a surveyed land area of 146,998 hectares. It was built with tiny housing units to house, train, and prepare state athletes for the National Sports Festival, which began in 1973.
