Balta is a small town of 73 people in the Lakes and Gardens region of North Dakota. Its elevation is 1,542 feet.

Understand edit

So close, yet so far away: Balta is located about 16 miles south of the geographical center of North America. That distinction goes to Rugby, the county seat. Originally, the town was named Egan, in honor of Egan Pierce, an official with the Soo Line railroad. It was renamed by the locals after Balta, in Russian Ukraine, the original home of many immigrant settlers.
