Belfield (population 800) is a small city in Stark County, North Dakota and only 15 minutes from Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Belfield boasts hotels and restaurants and multiple city parks for residents and tourists to enjoy. Belfield was founded in 1883, and has seen many boom and busts in this oil rich part of North Dakota.

  • 1 Initial Rock Historic Site (12 miles SW of Belfield), +1 701-227-7800. Initial Rock is the site of an overnight camp on May 28, 1876 of George Armstrong Custer's men, on their way to the Battle of Little Big Horn, which happened on June 25, 1876. Two soldiers, W.C. Williams and F. Neely, carved their names in a rock still present at the site. Williams and Neely, under the command of Marcus Reno, survived the battle.
