Carignan is a sprawling city whose territory forms a half donut on the west side of the city of Chambly, on the west bank of the Richelieu River. Carignan is located in the Regional County Municipality (RCM) of La Vallée-du-Richelieu, in Montérégie, in Quebec, Canada.
This town has mainly a residential, agricultural and commercial vocation (along Route 112). Recreational tourism activities are mainly: hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, nautical activities on the L'Acadie River and on the Chambly Basin, etc. Vacationing is developed on the islands, as well as along the L'Acadie and Richelieu rivers.
The main attractions of this city are, in particular:
- the area of islands located between the course of the L'Acadie river and the Richelieu river (Chambly basin): Goyer, aux Lièvres, Demers and au Foin; the channels between these islands give off a bucolic wilderness close to the city;
- its equestrian centres offering a variety of training programs for riders and horses, the boarding service for horses and participation in equestrian competitions;
- nautical activities on the Richelieu River and the L'Acadie River.

editThis municipality administers two non-contiguous territories, namely:
- the main territory forming a half donut on the west side of Chambly, between Saint-Basile-le-Grand and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu (Saint-Luc sector); this part of the territory has a length of 17.6 km (north-south direction);

Its built heritage is concentrated in several villages and hamlets:
