Lamia (Greek: Λαμία) (City population: 47,529, municipality: 66,657 (2021)) is the capital of the Phthiotis region of West Central Greece. The city is located on the slopes of Mount Othrys, near the river Spercheios.

One version is that city was named after the mythological figure of Lamia, the daughter of Poseidon and queen of the Trachineans. Another is that it is named after the Malians, the inhabitants of the surrounding area. Now it serves as the agricultural center of a fertile rural and livestock area.

  • 1 Lamia Fortress (Greek: Kastro Lamias).
  • 2 Archaeological Museum (inside the fortress).
  • 3 Gorgopotamos Bridge — The railway bridge over the river Gorgopotamos is famous for one of the biggest sabotage acts of World War II, known as "Operation Harling". A British mission and 150 Greek partisans blew it up on 25 November 1942, cutting off German supplies being transported between Athens and Thessaloniki.
  • Football: PAS Lamia 1964 play soccer in Superleague, the Greek top tier. Their home ground is Municipal Stadium (capacity 5500) 1 km north of town centre.
