Understand edit

This laid-back area doesn't provide too many big-name tourist attractions, but if you are a nature lover, there are secluded forests that allow hiding from civilisation for many days.

Get in edit

Most commonly from Ruzomberok.

Get around edit

Because there are only relatively small (but long) villages in the area, the public bus connections aren't ideal - while timely, they only operate a few times a day.

Ice climbing at Brankov waterfall
  • 1 Brankov waterfall (Brankovský vodopád). Highest waterfall of Low Tatras, especially nice in winter.

Do edit

  • 1 Ruzomberok-Korytnica cycle path (Cyklokorytnička) (Start at the bridge between the streets Krčméryho and Šoltésovej, continue along the Revúca river.). A bike road in place of former "small train" track, mostly flat - it's a nice all-day long trip for families, as you can avoid the main road on most of it. Korytnica used to be a famous spa area, but now it is somewhat degraded. There are some restaurants and mineral water springs in the area.
  • Hike to 2 Prašivá or Veľká Chocuľa peaks in Low Tatras (Start in Liptovská Lúžna or Korytnica). The hike up is quite steep for an hour or two.
  • 3 Salatín peak (From Liptovská Lúžna, approx. 2.5h one way.). A peak with good views, the ascend is somewhat steep near the peak.
  • Relax at 4 Gothal aquapark. A relatively small aquapark with a pool, few whirpools, wellness, bowling and minigolf. Also pizza available.
  • Fishing at 5 Revuca river. Pretty popular area amongst locals - during summer, many groups of people spend weekends here in tents, relaxing, rafting the (rather cold) river etc.
  • Climb a small 6 Via ferrata Dve Veže.

Great Fatra (and its edges) provides a few skiing areas:

  • 7 Smrekovica (From Ružomberok, turn into Podsuchá and go up the valley.). A secluded and small one, only 400 m.
  • 8 Donovaly. Not in Great Fatra nor Liptov, but right at its edge. You can spend a few days here, esp. because there is plenty of hotels and non-ski activities (e.g. park for kids).
  • 9 Čierny kameň. A picturesque mountain, the peak is not directly accessible but marked paths are going nearby.
