Luzhou has a history dating back over 2,000 years. It was an important river port for trade and a key site during several dynasties. The city’s name translates to "city of the reeds," reflecting its natural landscape near the riverbanks.

Today, Luzhou is a vibrant city known for its role in the production of baijiu(白酒), particularly the famous Luzhou Laojiao brand, a strong distilled spirit that has gained international recognition. It also boasts a growing economy and developing tourism sector, attracting visitors with its picturesque river views, ancient towns, and cultural heritage.

History

edit

Luzhou is named after the "Luzhou Water" theory, and its ancient name was Jiangyang. During the Dàtóng period of the Southern Liang dynasty (535-546 AD), Luzhou was established and it governed Jiangyang Commandery. The commandery included Jiangyang County (now Jiangyang District), Han'an County (now Daduokou Town in Naxi District), Mian County (now the northern part of Changning County), and Anle Garrison (now Hejiang Town in Hejiang County). The administrative seat of both the state and commandery was in present-day Jiangyang District.

Climate

edit

Luzhou City belongs to the subtropical humid climate zone, with a significant vertical climate in the southern mountainous areas. It features high temperatures, ample sunshine, abundant rainfall, distinct seasons, and a long frost-free period. The city experiences a climate where temperature, light, and water are well-matched throughout the seasons, with clear monsoonal patterns. Spring and autumn are warm, summer is hot, and winter is relatively mild. However, influenced by the Sichuan Basin's terrain, Luzhou experiences frequent thunderstorms in the summer and continuous overcast and rainy weather in the winter, with occasional light fog. Throughout the year, strong winds are rare, with light breezes of 0-2 meters per second being typical.

In 2016, the temperature in Luzhou was higher than usual, with more rainfall and slightly more sunshine. The city experienced adequate light, temperature, and water, making it a favorable year for agriculture. The number and intensity of extreme weather events, such as high temperatures, droughts, continuous rainy periods, windstorms, and thunderstorms, were lighter than usual. The frequency and intensity of strong cooling events were consistent with typical years, and there were more instances of heavy rainfall and flooding.
