Sino-Tibetan language
(Redirected from Meitei phrasebook)
Phrasebooks > Manipuri phrasebook

Manipuri language (ꯃꯅꯤꯄꯨꯔꯤ ꯂꯣꯟ), also known as Meitei (ꯃꯩꯇꯩ ꯂꯣꯟ) or Meetei (ꯃꯤꯇꯩ ꯂꯣꯟ), is a Sino-Tibetan language, the predominant language and the lingua franca in the Indian state of Manipur, also spoken in the neighbouring states of Assam and Tripura. It is one of the 22 official languages in India. It is spoken by the Meitei ethnicity as their mother tongue. Further, it is spoken by the tribesmen communities and the migrant workers in Manipur as their second language. It has approximately 2 million L1 speakers and 1 million L2 speakers. Historically speaking, Meitei language is the only Indian language whose literature got developed under the care of royal patronages, from the Sino-Tibetan family. One will find their journey easier while travelling to the Indo-ASEAN connecting region by speaking Manipuri, as Manipur is the only place in India from where a starting point of the India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway (or Asian Superhighway) towards Thailand and other ASEAN nations is developed.

Geographical distribution of Meitei language speakers in India, Bangladesh and Myanmar
Regions where Meitei is native, majority, official and educational language
Regions where Meitei is indigenous and educational language but not official
Regions where Meitei is not indigenous and official but educational
Regions where Meitei is considered indigenous but not official and educational
Regions with significant Meitei speaking minorities

The importance of Manipuri for its cultural as well as economic aspects is high as Manipur has been at the crossroads of Asian economic and cultural exchange for more than 2,500 years, connecting the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia to Southeast Asia, East Asia, Siberia, regions in the Arctic, Micronesia and Polynesia enabling migration of people, cultures and religions.

"India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway" connects Moreh town of Manipur, India with Mae Sot of Thailand through Myanmar, thereby creating the "Imphal-Mandalay-Bangkok" Route of 1,813 km.

Manipuri is the most spoken Indian language from the Sino-Tibetan family (which includes e.g. Chinese, Burmese and Tibetan). It uses the Meitei script (also called Meetei script or Manipuri script), which is an Indic (Brahmic) script. Bengali script and Latin script are also used. The Bengali script was the main one used from the 18th century to the 1980s. The earliest records of the language's existence date back to 1445 BC (3500 years ago). Stone inscriptions exist dating back two millennia. Antique coins dating back to 1st–7th century have also been found.

Manipuri has many dialects (sub forms), among which Standard Meitei dialect (Proper Meitei dialect; code: mtei), has further sub-dialects. Among dialects, as the name also suggests, Proper Meitei or Standard Meitei is the most accepted form of the language while Classical Meitei or Classical Manipuri serves as the liturgical language of Sanamahism (Ancient Meitei religion).
