Formerly a farming and mill town, modern Amesbury is for the most part residential. It is one of two northernmost towns in Massachusetts, the other being neighboring Salisbury.

There are daily buses from Haverhill and from Salisbury via Newburyport. Buses stops at 1 Nicholas J. Costello Transportation Center, which is just a few hundred meters from Main street.
