Monte Alén is the largest protected area of Equatorial Guinea, one of the oldest forests in the world. Its biodiversity is the main reason for the creation of ECOFAC; a project that manages the park while improving the conditions of the people of the area.

History

In 1997, the Equatorial Guinea government adopted a decree law which granted the extension of Monte Alén National park to the south thereby uniting it with Monte Mitra National Park.

Landscape

Located on a protected area of 2000 km², bordered by Uoro river to the west, then Niefang-Gabon to the east.

Flora and fauna

105 species of mammal are registered here in this park including gorilla and chimpanzee. Different species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, aquatic species have also been recorded here in this national park.

The forest of Monte Alén is characterized with the African leafy forest, with species peculiar to the Guinea-Atlantic area. It offers a great variety of species and is rich in vegetables that belong to the Caesalpiniaceae family.

Depending on your choice of getting in, you can decide to get to Monte Alén by plane or ferry.

By plane

  • 1 Malabo International Airport (SSG IATA). Since there is no direct route from Malabo; the capital of Equatorial Guinea to Monte Alén, you will have to take a taxi to Malabo airport, then fly to Bata (approximately a 40-min flight). By ferry

If you are interested in traveling via a ferry instead, you will have to take a ferry to Bata, then travel to Monte Alén.

Permits is CFA10,000 per day. In case you need a guide, you will have to pay an extra CFA10,000.
