Rio Bonito is a peripheral, partially rural municipality belonging to the metropolitan agglomeration of Rio de Janeiro. It has a relatively small population, and has wide areas of environmental protection (just like several other municipalities located on the outskirts of the Rio's metro area). Rio Bonito is the easternmost municipality in the Greater Rio region, and it was in the downtown area of this municipality that the urban expansion of the metropolitan agglomeration of Rio de Janeiro along the vector of the BR-101 highway ended.
