Nagercoil (நாகர்கோவில் Nākarkōvil) is a city in Tamil Nadu, India. It's the southernmost city on the Indian mainland.

Historically, Nagercoil was part of the Travancore state and the second most prominent city in that state, after Trivandrum (later Thiruvananthapuram). Until 10 years after Indian independence, Nagercoil remained part of the Travancore state until it was merged into Tamil Nadu in 1956.

Thanumalayan temple
  • Krishnancoil is 1,5 km away from Nagercoil, on the road to Thiruvananthapuram.
  • The Nagaraja Temple (from which Nagercoil derives its name) has Nagaraja as its principal deity. The devout traditionally offer milk to this "King of Snakes".
  • Suchindrum and the Thanumalayan Temple are located about 6 km from the city centre. Pilgrims from far beyond the region borders come here for its Hindu shrines. Quite uniquely, this Hindu temple combines the worship of the Trinity of Hinduism (Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma) in Thanumalayan, the presiding deity. Indra, the King of the Devas, traditionally worships at this temple each night.
  • 1 St. Xavier's Cathedral. St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, in the Kottar locality, was established in 1600 AD. St.Francis Xavier stayed here and the church was built on the land which St. Xavier was awarded by the Venad king.

Padmanabhapuram Palace
  • 1 Padmanabhapuram Palace. The old headquarters of Travancore royal family The palace is recorded as the World's largest Wooden Palace, by the Guinness Books of Records. It is entirely made of teak and rosewood and has flooring made of granite and a rare ayurvedic mixture with secret extracts to keep the floor cool in the summer season and warm during the rainy season. It has a grand Dubar Hall made out of rosewood and glass. The Palace houses numerous rare antiques, including a 600-year-old spice bed made out of a special wood treated in various spices to rejuvenate the kings. The clock tower is one of the oldest in South Asia that is still working. It is 65 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the former capital of Travancore. The royal sword of Travancore Maharajas is preserved here and is taken to Thiruvananthapuram in a grand procession during Arattu Festivals of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
