What is this article's scope?
editReading through this article I'm not sure what it's about. It has a region template but a park status tag. The page name is about a body of water (which we don't usually write articles about) but the lede and Get in sections give the impression the author wanted the cover the Discovery Islands, some of which are located in Desolation Sound. If it is, it's overlapping with an existing article. To provide some clarity, I'm proposing to:
- Rename this page "Outer Islands and Mainland Inlets" and include as a destination under the Discovery Islands. Some of the lede and most of the Get in section are specific to the outer Islands, plus it preserves the original authors' names for attribution purposes. I'll then copy the content I've been working on at User:Shaundd/Articles in progress to further flesh the article out.
- Move the listing for the Desolation Sound Marine Park to Lund (British Columbia), which is the nearest town and the usual spot for accessing the park. Alternatively, a separate page could be created for the marine park. It probably meets our minimum requirements to be an article as it has several campgrounds but I don't know if it has sufficient other listings to really warrant its own article.
If there are no objections I'll implement this in a couple of days. -Shaundd (talk) 16:21, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
- An alternative to the above would be to leave the article named as-is, use the city template and refocus it on the areas that touch Desolation Sound or are in the vicinity -- i.e., the Redonda Islands, the Desolation Sound Marine Park and Toba Inlet. This is a bit messier than what I proposed above as it splits the outer Discovery Islands across two articles, and the Desolation Sound article itself would straddle two regions (Discovery Islands and Sunshine Coast (British Columbia)). On the other hand, Desolation Sound does have name recognition in kayaking/boating where it is a popular destination so it may make sense to treat it separately. If this route was chosen, I'd put the breadcrumb to Discovery Islands since that is the region where most of the land area lies and I'd prefer not to break the islands across two regions. -Shaundd (talk) 22:25, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
- I decided to keep this guide separate from the Outer Islands and Mainland Inlets and focus it as described in my "alternative" option above. There are slight differences between the two. The outer islands tend to focus on fishing more and have more all-inclusive fishing lodges/resorts, while Desolation Sound seems to be more about kayaking. Desolation Sound is also accessible by water taxi from the Sunshine Coast, as well as Campbell River, whereas the Outer Islands tend to be strictly accessed from Campbell River. I'll continue to add content to both articles and see how it goes. -Shaundd (talk) 07:20, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
