Meaning of "emancipated" and "human occupation" edit
These sentences were recently added to this article:
"According to population estimates from July 2013, the city has 84,437 inhabitants. Was officially emancipated December 14, 1952, but there is human occupation (by the people who occupied the land, coming from the south of the country) since approximately 1921."
I don't understand what "emancipated" means in this context, as I would expect it to mean "freed," such as by ending slavery, and I don't really understand the part of the second sentence starting with "but."
