Sleep

edit
  • The section on "Sleep" seems VERY odd. There are no citations and it does not make sense.
Howdy and welcome to Wikivoyage. Please feel free to plunge forward and edit the page. Just FYI, we generally do not cit travel information. Let us know if you have any questions! Thanks. (WT-en) Maj 14:14, 6 August 2006 (EDT)

Regions

edit

I do not really see any reason to go against the official split into 6 provinces. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:15, 26 January 2010 (EST)

I know next to nothing about Madagascar, but you may want to browse through this guidebook on Google Books (technically, it's a preview, but nearly all pages are there). It's the most recent edition, too! (WT-en) AHeneen 10:22, 26 January 2010 (EST)
Excellent and will do, I know a little bit about Madagascar as it is on the list of places I really want to visit. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:37, 26 January 2010 (EST)
Perhaps you know then that the Malagasy language is most closely related to the languages of Borneo and the first inhabitants were Austronesian from Indonesia/PNG? (WT-en) AHeneen 10:45, 26 January 2010 (EST)
I do indeed. An indonesian/polynesian language origin. It is the ecology of this place that blows my mind. The so-called 8th continent. Extraordinary fauna and amazing landscapes. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:51, 26 January 2010 (EST)
Map done. Madagascar has to get the award for "most important country with almost zero coverage by Wikivoyage".--(WT-en) Burmesedays 04:26, 15 February 2010 (EST)
Provinces were replaced with Regions in October 2009. The 22 Regions are the official first-level administrative divisions.--Greenearrow (talk) 20:06, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Official languages

edit

An editing war has started over whether English is or is not an official language. Is it? (WT-en) Ikan Kekek 08:21, 19 September 2011 (EDT)

This] says English was removed as an official language in 2010. However, that is Wikipedia and the comment has no citation, so God only knows if it is real or not. --(WT-en) burmesedays 08:28, 19 September 2011 (EDT)

locust plague

edit

The caution box "NOTE: Parts of Madagascar are currently sustaining an increasingly severe plague of locusts. Food shortages remain likely. (March 2013)" doesn't seem particularly relevant. It is now October. Can we remove? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 01:10, 18 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Bubonic plague

Time for a warning? Bubonic Plague Outbreak Kills 40 In Madagascar Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:16, 27 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

The plague existed in Madagascar before the recent news coverage, and combined with all of the other medical concerns in the country (which are far more likely to be an issue to the traveler), I would be more in favor of beefing up the "Stay healthy" section rather than putting a warning box at the top of the article. Note that WHO is not currently recommending any travel restrictions [1], but if that changed then a warning box would make more sense. That said, I'm nearly always against reacting to the latest thing being hyped by the news (ebola in Dallas, a terrorist attack at a dance club, plague in Madagascar, etc) with a warning box since such things are remote threats (at worst) to the average traveler, and thus a giant warning box seems to me like fearmongering, so another opinion might be useful. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:27, 27 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Since the disease is easily cured with antibiotics, its spread isn't a good reason not to travel, just a reason to inform people that they should be ready to get antibiotics in a timely fashion. I don't have a problem with that being in "Stay healthy," rather than as a warning box, for the reasons you state. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:46, 27 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I've updated the "Stay healthy" section with a mention of the plague and some other health concerns [2]. Please edit/expand as appropriate. -- Ryan • (talk) • 22:18, 27 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
