Taxi numbers

edit

Swept in from the Pub:

Living in Morogoro, Tanzania, if one does not own a vehicle, it's quite useful to have the phone numbers of a few local taxis handy. In fact it's the only option during the evening, when public transit doesn't run, and in many other situations besides. I'm sure this is true of many other towns & cities. So, this would quite legitimately be useful information for travelers.

However, taxis here don't have central dispatch or consolidation of any kind - you need to get the cell phone number of every taxi you intend to use. It seems quite strange to put someone's primary cell phone number on a public web page, even if they are a business. Also, I was thinking that because there are literally hundreds of taxis in the area, it could get to be quite ungainly to list them on the main page. That led me to wondering if there is a precedent for this situation.

I vaguely recall some discussion along these lines for the Siem Reap (Cambodia) article, about whether individual bike cabbies can/should be recommended, and the consensus was eventually "no" -- this would lead to too much touting.
However, a place like Morogoro sounds sufficient off the beaten path that this should not be a problem. So, yes, I think it's fine to list the names and numbers of good cabbies. (WT-en) Jpatokal 13:25, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
The one downside of listing a host of numbers for individual cab drivers is that the list will quite soon be incorrect as cabbies change numbers or just go into another business. --(WT-en) Wandering 11:01, 1 October 2008 (EDT)
