Talk:Prince Edward Island

Latest comment: 7 years ago by Ikan Kekek in topic List of counties

A good rule of thumb for what is or isn't a destination (ie with its own article) is if it has places to sleep, eat, shop, etc. So the Grand Canyon is a destination but the Golden Gate Bridge is not (San Francisco is).

So, I'm starting the Project:What is an article? page -- let's move this discussion there. -- (WT-en) Evan 06:45, 30 Oct 2003 (PST)

How to divide?

edit

Right now this article doesn't need to be broken up. We need to add a lot more info, first. But I think that we should plan for how it will be broken up in the future. Rather than dividing it by towns, I think it should be divided into regions. With the exceptions of Charlottetown and possibly Summerside, none of the villages on PEI are large enough to merit their own articles (Malpeque had one, but I've merged it into the main article). I think that the obvious division is by county, with extra sections for Charlottetown and Summerside. So eventually we should plan to make Prince Edward Island a general introduction, and move the details into Charlottetown, Summerside, Prince Edward Island (Queen's County), Prince Edward Island (Prince County), Prince Edward Island (King's County). -- 24.224.228.90 18:53, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT) (PBurka on Wikipedia)

Um, no, that's not really the way it works. Basically anywhere that you can sleep (and has something worth seeing) gets its own article, and these are then collected up in regions. Please see Project:What is an article? and Project:Geographical hierarchy. (WT-en) Jpatokal 22:13, 26 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Prince Edward Island is located on the east coast of Canada. It has 3 main industries: fishing, farming, and tourism. People from all over the world come to PEI and enjoy its quiet lifestyle, and sense of family.

List of counties

edit

A list of counties was just added. I understand that PEI has 3 counties, but I don't see how it serves the traveller to have a section with red links to articles that don't exist about them, nor how it's even useful for them to be told these counties exist. When I travelled to PEI years ago, the counties did pop up in some tourist info as a means to divide the province. Looking at Tourism PEI and Welcome PEI, it seems the tourist agencies have moved on from the counties, so they don't seem to have the same relevance now. I think we can probably get away with not talking about them, but I won't argue if someone more familiar with the island makes a case that they're meaningful to the traveller. -Shaundd (talk) 05:18, 26 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
We currently have four local-level articles for the entire province. I see no need to divide to subregions at this point. K7L (talk) 05:29, 26 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
I fully agree we don't need subregions right now. I think Ikan was raising whether we need to mention the counties at all (right now they're plain text in the lede). -Shaundd (talk) 05:58, 26 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
See this difference. Quite recently, there was a "Counties" section with 3 red-linked articles. If it's important to mention their existence, fine, and I don't mind the current setup, without a dedicated section or links. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:24, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
