I suggest this article needs editing into a Park template. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 08:05, 22 September 2009 (EDT)

Capitalizing animal names

edit

Hi, everyone. I've seen a great tendency to capitalize the names of animals and plants on this site. I don't agree with it. Rhino, elephant, mongoose and the like are not proper names, though when an elephant has a name like Babar or a dog has a name like Fido, that's capitalized. In addition, the first word of a Latin species designation, such as Homo sapiens, is capitalized. But in names of animals and plants, I can't really see a good style reason to capitalize any words that aren't at the beginning of a sentence and aren't proper adjectives like Javan, Asian, Australian, etc. If we want to set off the names of animals, bolding or, especially for non-English names, italics can be good solutions.

What do you think? Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:47, 3 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
