Ask your taxi driver to take you to a decent hotel?

edit

In the 'sleep' section, there is the following line: "If you really, really care about comfortable living, ask your taxi driver and give him a price and he'll take you somewhere decent, as a rule." Now I don't know Xuzhou or indeed China at all, but in other parts of the world, there is a common scam that taxi drivers take tourists to hotels the driver has an arrangement with, whereby he gets a "commission" (basically a bribe) from the hotel for bringing them customers who might otherwise have stayed elsewhere. These establishments are often not the best quality, and also tend to overcharge for what they actually provide. Is that potentially what is happening here, or are the Xuzhou taxi drivers genuinely helpful to travellers with no expectation of receiving financial compensation beyond whatever the traveller themselves are willing to pay? --ThunderingTyphoons! @STW932: You've been editing this page a lot recently and seem to be familiar with China. Would you mind sharing your opinion on this issue? Hope to hear from you. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 10:02, 16 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

That line was part of the original article that was transferred from Wikitravel several years ago. I agree that asking a taxi driver to recommend a hotel is generally not a good idea. The scam you mention certainly does exist in China. If you want to delete that line, I would have absolutely no objections. That being said, asking taxi drivers for advice on hotels is not something I have done in the past (at least not within the last 20 years), so I can't say exactly how common the scam is, and though I have been to many cities in China, I have not yet visited Xuzhou, so I'm also not able to comment on whether the taxi drivers in Xuzhou are any better or worse than those in other cities.STW932 (talk) 11:02, 16 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Well, regardless, you have confirmed my suspicion that the advice is basically dodgy. I don't know why anyone would ask a random stranger to recommend a decent hotel; locals are hardly going to have an informed opinion, even if there is no scam involved. I'll remove the line. Thanks for your reply and for your good work on this article :) --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:10, 16 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
