Template talk:Ping group

Needed?
editThe documentation does not tell about when this template, rather than {{ping}}, is to be used. We try to keep the number of templates low, so unless there is some big advantage I'd rather see it marked as historic or something; I added {{experimental}}, although it was created half a year ago.
If the template is to be used, we need some clear explanation of use cases, or some other context to make it clear when I'd like to use this. It seems the difference is that people pinged aren't shown. It might be tempting to hide them for aesthetic reasons, but I think it is more important to do things openly, in most cases – in what cases would the hiding be truly advantageous?

- You can see examples of how it is used from w:en:Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Ping_group. It is similar to {{Ping}} except that it allows a statement to placed beforehand. The default is to display the editors being pinged.
{{ping group |''This is an example of how {{tl|ping group}} works; soliciting further comment'' |LPfi |Peaceray}}
produces- This is an example of how {{ping group}} works; soliciting further comment (LPfi —Peaceray)
- Should I add this to the documentation? Peaceray (talk) 06:12, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
- Oops, I thought I checked that – but I did, you linked usage on en-wp, which I think is only marginally relevant. The effect can be got by "[...] soliciting further comment ({{ping|LPfi |Peaceray}})". Regardless, the documentation should show not only how the template can be used, but when it should be used.
