Tirur is a town in Malappuram District, in the Malabar region of Kerala, in India.

The town is 43 km south of Kozhikode. It is a major trading centre of fish and betel, and is known as the birthplace of the poet Thunchath Ezhuthachan.

If you are collecting a hire car at Kozhikode airport, it should take less than an hour to drive. Take the NH213 to Malappuram, then the SH71. If you are driving from Kozhikode city take the main NH17 coast road south for approximately 40 km, then turn right onto the SH71.

  • Thunchan Parambu (1.5 km away). Birth place of the great poet Thunchath Ezhuthachan, considered as the Father of the Malayalam literature. This is the site of the annual Thunchan Utsavam literary festival, which takes place in the first week of February.
  • Thirunavaya Banks (8 km southeast). A large river bank on shores of River Nila. This river bank hold stories of Biggest Hindu Festival of south India- Mamankam (similar to Kumbh Mela of North), which got extinct in 18th century after annexation of Malabar by British. However the heroic deeds of Malabar soldiers against traditional Suicide squad of Valluvanad and related historical tales, still remain fresh in its air. Due to the tradition of war on its river bank, today its a major place for Post-Death rituals for Hindus as well as for immersing ashes after cremation. Thirunavaya has the only 2nd Brahma Temple in India, after Pushkar in Rajasthan.
