Wikivoyage kudos edit

What a great idea this project is! Thanks to you and all of the Wikivoyage contributors. I'll be traveling and working in West Africa in the spring, and will be sure to contribute articles on some of the nations not yet covered in depth.

Trekking regions edit

Hi Maj, first apologies for impulsively adding the three places to the main page without due consideration of the rules, and giving you the trouble of having to delete them. However, I have one point I'd like to raise: I wonder whether a new format should be designed for regions like Everest, possibly based on the 'small city' format. Although the centers of population along the trek are listed as 'cities' in Wikivoyage, in reality they are generally no more than a few houses - the biggest village being about 50 houses, but with many consisting of no more than two or three dwellings. If each or these villages are designated their own page, as in say the listings for cities in a country, I wonder what information could be used to complete the pages. At a stretch, all the lodges could be listed under the 'sleep' section, though as they are all of similar design and cost and there are no street names or telephones, this would only be a list of names. Possibly the 'see' section could have information about which mountains are visible from a particular village. Otherwise, every village is pretty much the same. Also, I wonder of the benefit for the traveler to have this information spread out over 10 or 12 pages. In the 'small city' format, all information is convenietly included on the one page, irrespective of its location within the city - for example the western part of town may have beaches, while to the north there might be a castle. However, as neither of these districts have enough attractions to constitute being individual pages within themselves, they are included under the general heading of the city in which they are located. Anyway, just throwing out some ideas that would benefit from the imput of your (and Evan's) wisdom. I've raised the same point on the discussion page for templates.

Where in Pennsylvania is Chadds Ford? edit

Where in Pennsylvania is Chadds Ford? There is a whole state to choose from, and I do not know if it is a tiny village or a huge megamopolis. The IsIn link does not go down to the county or sub-state region level and Chadds Ford is not linked from the Pennsylvania article, so I have no reference point for it. There is currently (2 April 06) a discussion going on at the talk page for Project:Destination of the Month candidates, about possibly adding an "Off The Beaten Path" box to the Main Page. (WT-en) Todd VerBeek has genned up a sample of what this might look like, appearing on the Project:Graffiti wall. The idea is to accommodate a wider range of DotMs than can currently be done, since there's beginning to be a substantial backlog of attractive candidates. Kaliningrad - External Links removed edit

I noticed that you removed the external links section back on 19 April 2006 - any particular reason why? You didn't place them in Russia's external links section (hasn't got one anyway), so the info was lost. I've put them back in case it was a mistake.

I'm struggling with where to post replies. Obviously where there is a discussion on a certain page (eg Botswana), then it's clear we all chip in along the same thread. Hi Howard! Good question-- and a good answer. In general, we try to keep the conversation on the talk page of the article in question, ie Kaliningrad, but since I knew you were new, I wanted to make sure you saw my comments so I put them on your talk page. When it's really a matter just between two people and the conversation is on one of their talk pages, the other person can either keep an eye out for replies on the Recent Changes page, or add it to their watchlist. Hi Maj, though I'm honored to get a revert by a Wikivoyage founder personally, a real comment to your revert would have been a little bit more constructive than "Reverted edits by Túrelio (Talk); changed back to last version by Evan)". Evan had reverted my addition of that really useful city map link in the section weblinks with the comment "Weblinks - No extlinks section". I didn't challenge that, but put the link where it seemed to fit best. The article about Chicago contains more than 100 external links. So what's the reason for your revert? Vandalism and what to do about it edit

I read all of the policy pages you indicated. The vandalism-in-progress page looks quite useful. Let me say that you all are far more forgiving than I would be in your place. While I don't think that Willy should be banned for life because of his actions, I feel his actions are sufficient proof that he does not care one iota about the project, and should therefore have been banned on the spot for a day or two. No trial is necessary, because we can all see the remains of "goatse" on the main page. The most immediate benefit, of course, would be that he would get bored a lot faster and leave us with less mess to clean up. On the other hand, recently, I was trying to get my grandfather involved with Wikipedia, and it was discovered that his dynamic IP had been recently banned because the person before him had been a vandal. (WT-en) Here's a translation of German headers. Does your script translate articles using an outside source? If possible would it be wise to have your script translate headers that way we won't have to rely on a non-human translation? Saw that there were a few problems with headers on Stolberg. Here's a list of headers that I apparently overlooked - User:(WT-en) Sapphire/Sandbox/DE-EN_Headers. I didn't translate every header, because a few of them are irrevelant like Kino - Movie theather. I took out the vfd for Ross and added a couple of other cities called Ross. Only open point is the Ross in Marin_County. I have seen three pages that seem to link to Ross but I assume that this is always the same city (or bay area people aren't too creative with names...). Is the Marin County link and North_Bay_(Bay_Area) to the same Ross? I 'm surprised how many Ross are in this world and how much work a disambiguation page can make. Hi Maj - the World66 links you've been adding are causing an extra "/" to show up at the beginning of URLs in my browser. I think that simply leaving the opening "/" off of the beginning of the tag ( instead of ) will fix the issue. Aspen vacation rentals edit

I assume you put these here to pose the question as to whether they are appropriate. In my opinion, they are -- narrowly. Aspen, like several other ski towns in Colorado, has a lot of lodging that consists of "vacation rentals" not directly accessible to the public, for which these rental services are basically the only way of getting access. Some of these are great places to stay. (I haven't stayed in the ones in Aspen, but have experience with their equivalents in other towns, and speak from that experience.) As distasteful as keeping submissions from touts may be, the Project:The traveller comes first policy seems to trump this concern, IMO. There's room for discussion, and if someone can come up with a way of accessing these rentals without going through the shills, I'd reconsider. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 15:37, 5 August 2006 (EDT)

Great minds 2.0 (Beta) edit

I had an idea for the (WT-en) AutoTransBot, however since I am absolutely ignormoose about computing languages I come to you for guidance. I had a conversation with myself about creating a template for the (WT-en) AutoTransBot, which the bot would go around an automagically (this would be truly magical) find articles with the template on the article's talk page and either alert you or, in the spirit of Web 2.0, read all of the variables and spit out an EN to DE (or whatever) translation. Hi Maj! Wikivoyage is looking great these days. I contributed for a while last fall and then have been on a break (new baby, etc). I just got back on recently and really like how it's evolving.

I have a question to ask you and/or the community. In February 2006, I launched a wiki devoted to all things outdoors - WikiOutdoors. I was wondering if it would be kosher to include a link to WikiOutdoors categories in relevant sections on Wikivoyage? For example, in the Sedona article, would it be possible to include a link to the Sedona category in WikiOutdoors? I know that Wikivoyage doesn't want to get into that much details (i.e. on specific hikes) but the information could be valuable to folks traveling to these areas for outdoors activities? County Carlow edit

Hello there! Thanks a million for all the good words, glad the work isn't going unnoticed!

Just a few things: The Etiquette is relevant to most of the country, so I've included it there. The Nationalist is a local newspaper, so is only relevant to Carlow. As for the photo, I'm unsure where the manual of style stands on photographs of newspapers, so I've no intention for the moment of putting it back in. Similarly, the radio stations that were mentioned were the ones that could be received in Carlow - most of them can't be heard across the country. Again, I'm not sure if they're considered appropriate, so I won't be putting them back in for the moment at least. If you could help me out I'd be most grateful.

Also, the photographs of the Fairgreen Shopping Centre and the one on the very bottom of shoppers on Grafton Street - they include people but they do show crowds... I presume they're OK being left in? The photo of the underpass on the relief road isn't the best - I'll be sure to change that over the coming weeks.

Santa Rosa County edit

I created this article without a disambiguator as Wikipedia suggests there's only one county with this name. However you've moved it to Santa Rosa County (Florida) with the summary move to disambig (there's a Santa Rosa County in California) - but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_counties_in_California says there isn't. "world-wide" vs "worldwide" edit

Just saw the edit [5] where you reverted "worldwide" back to "world-wide" - shouldn't all occurrences of "world-wide" (with the possible exception of "World-Wide Web") be changed to "worldwide"? ~ 58.8.2.182 16:27, 19 June 2007 (EDT)

"World Wide Web" normally has no hyphen. I cannot think of circumstances where I'd use the hyphen. To me "worldwide" is a standard compound. I'd be no more likely to write "world-wide" than to write "book-store". I would be somewhat more reluctant to correct it by taking out the hyphen, though.
