New Carlisle, a place that embodies the culture clash of the southern Gaspé: though it's majority-Anglophone and named after the hometown of a British colonial governor, New Carlisle is also the childhood home of René Lévesque, the founder of the Parti Québécois which launched the modern Quebec sovereignty movement. A memorial to Lévesque comprising his childhood home and an interpretive centre are due to open in 2018, but other than that, New Carlisle doesn't have much in the way of visitor attractions. It is, however, a useful stopover for food, gas, and supplies.
