The Summer Palace is a royal palace and large imperial garden of the Qing Dynasty, located in the northwest of Haidian District, Beijing, China, covering an area of 297 hectares. The Summer Palace was built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty and rebuilt during the Guangxu period. It was once one of the three mountains and five gardens in the western suburbs of Beijing during the Qing Dynasty. The Summer Palace is renowned for its ingenious combination of artificial architecture and natural landscapes in garden design, representing the pinnacle of Chinese garden art. In 1998, the Summer Palace was designated as a World Cultural Heritage site.

It was first built in 1750 during the 15th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty and in the 10th year of the Xianfeng reign
It was burned down by the Anglo French coalition in 1860. In the twelfth year of the Guangxu reign (1886), the Qing court misappropriated naval funds and other funds to begin reconstruction, and two years later adopted its current name as the retirement home for Empress Dowager Cixi. In 1900, it was destroyed by the Eight Nation Alliance in the 26th year of the Guangxu reign, and was repaired in 1902 in the 28th year of the Guangxu reign.
The Summer Palace is a large natural landscape garden built using Kunming Lake and Wanshou Mountain as its base sites, based on the scenery of West Lake in Hangzhou, and drawing on some design techniques and artistic conception of Jiangnan gardens. It is also the most well preserved royal palace garden and is known as the Royal Garden Museum. The entire park covers an area of 3.009 square kilometers, with water surface accounting for about three-quarters. It is composed of Wanshou Mountain and Kunming Lake. There are over 100 scenic buildings and more than 20 courtyards of various sizes distributed in the park, with over 3000 ancient buildings and a total area of nearly 70000 square meters. There are over 1600 ancient and famous trees.
