By car edit
The main roads of De Wolden are the A28 highway and N48 regional road. From Amsterdam and the Western Netherlands in general, take the A1 heading for Amersfoort, from where you head onto the A28 heading for Zwolle. Follow this road until having passed Zwolle, the A32 splits off of the A28 not far from Meppel. Head onto the A32, using exit 3 (Meppel-Noord), to turn right onto the N375. From this road, the northern side of the municipality, split from the south part by the Hogeveensche Vaart, can be accessed. The south side can be accessed by staying on the A28 and using exit 24 (De Wijk) and exit 25 (Zuidwolde). From the Southern Netherlands as well as the Eastern Netherlands, first head for Apeldoorn using the A50 from Arnhem and Eindhoven, which can be combined with the A73 when travelling from Limburg. From Apeldoorn, follow the A50 heading north, following directions to Zwolle, which will get you onto the A28. From here, you can follow the directions from Zwolle listed above. From Groningen, use the A28 heading for Hoogeveen, after which you turn onto the A28 again, at which point you will find yourself driving into De Wolden. From Leeuwarden, follow the A32 heading south. After passing Steenwijk, use exit 3 (Meppel-Noord) to get onto the N375, by taking a right turn at the end of the exit ramp. Alternatively, stay on the A32 for a while longer, heading onto the A28 heading for Hoogeveen once the two highways meet.
By public transit edit
Even though a railway runs through the municipality, no train stations remain along the line, with the last one being closed over seventy years ago. Busses serve the municipality instead. From the rail station in Meppel, line 32 connects to Hoogeveen via Ruinen, line 34 connects to the town of Zuidwolde. From the rail station in Hoogeveen, line 31 connects to Zuidwolde, line 32 connects to Meppel via Ruinen.
Get around edit
The best way to get around is by car or bike, of which the latter is best recommended, as they are much more available in the region. Busses are an alternative, but only give a limited coverage of the region.
