Welcome

edit

Hello, Paul! Welcome to Wikivoyage. Please take a sec to look at our copyleft and policies and guidelines, but feel free to plunge forward and edit some pages. Scanning the Manual of style, especially the article templates, can give you a good idea of how we like articles formatted. If you need help, check out Project:Help, and if you need some info not on there, post a message in the travellers' pub.

Thanks for your help with Victoria. One small nit: it's a good idea to get in the habit of putting copyright information on pictures. Looking forward to working with you! --(WT-en) Evan 10:48, 29 Jan 2004 (EST)

Oof. Well, shot myself in the foot on that one! By putting images on Wikivoyage, you agree to license them under our Copyleft. If you want something to be by-nc, it can't be on Wikivoyage. I'm terribly sorry; not a very pleasant welcome, to entangle you in annoying license drivel! But we've tried very hard to be license-clean on the site, and I don't like letting this stuff slide. I can delete the file off our servers for you if you want. --(WT-en) Evan 23:09, 29 Jan 2004 (EST)
No worries. I'm actually just confused about what you meant. I understand that everything must be by-sa, and that's fine with me. I thought you wanted me to include information on what the original copyright was, which is why I labelled it by-nc (it is my photo, and that's how I've licenced it on my personal photos website). So, what should I put for copyright info? --(WT-en) Dawnview 22:24, 29 Jan 2004 (PST)
You can go ahead and delete the original file I uploaded though. I no longer need that one on the site. --(WT-en) Dawnview 22:29, 29 Jan 2004 (PST)
The main thing is that a lot of people tend to just find a good image on the Net and copy it to Wikivoyage, without checking with the original creator to make sure it's OK to release it under our license. (These are mostly people who haven't read the Project:Image policy, even though there's that "STOP!" message on the upload page.)
So other people who are more nitpicky about this kinda stuff, like me, watch for wording in the image page to the effect of "I took this picture" or "Copyright Me, released under by-sa". If it's not there, I get a little nervous. Even though it's kinda unlikely that you didn't take the picture or that you have rights to release it (I mean, it's a picture of you), it's a good habit to put source info on the picture. Anyways, thanks for the attention, and again, I'm sorry that your first welcome is license annoyances! I hope it hasn't scared you off. --(WT-en) Evan 14:28, 31 Jan 2004 (EST)

Race conditions

Just checking to see how the wiki handles race conditions. --(WT-en) Dawnview 19:37, 31 Jan 2004 (EST)

Spell check

edit

There is a spell checker, but it finds only known mispeelings. I added a few to the list after proofing the page. -(WT-en) phma 00:30, 1 Feb 2004 (EST)

Click on Special Pages, then Maintenance, then find the function "mispeelings". -(WT-en) phma 07:34, 1 Feb 2004 (EST)
Google shows 20300 "Khoisan" versus 444 "Khoesan". Who says "Khoesan"? -(WT-en) phma 07:49, 1 Feb 2004 (EST)

Hey, are you back home? --(WT-en) Evan 23:06, 15 Apr 2004 (EDT)

Yep, got home Saturday night. I had my first interview today...and bombed it. :( So I come back to Wikivoyage, to drown my sorrows. :) --(WT-en) Dawnview 01:18, 16 Apr 2004 (EDT)
