Hello and welcome to Wikivoyage. Please take a look at Welcome, business owners and Project:Don't tout.

Wikivoyage is not meant to be a yellow pages, nor an advertising brochure, so please do not add listings for your business that have flowery, promotional language or that lack any useful information, in particular price ranges for rooms. Also do not list your listing more than once, and do not list it in a city other than the one it actually is in. Lastly, please, oh please, do not include the city, state, and zip code in the address field. Think about it, there is absolutely no reason to do so, since the article name should indicate what city it is in.

Edits that do not follow these guidelines will be reverted. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 02:07, 25 March 2009 (EDT)

Perhaps you don't understand the blinking red dot. Perhaps you do read my messages and ignore them. Either way, I will continue to revert your edits until you follow basic policies and add any worthwhile information to your listings. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 12:03, 19 May 2009 (EDT)
You are still on "revert on sight", until you acknowledge this message.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:59, 20 April 2010 (EDT)

Every edit made from this IP address has been removed, so to avoid wasting more of your (and our) time I've blocked you from editing for one day. Please read SEO and then leave a message on this talk page indicating that you have read & understand that guideline, otherwise your edits will continue to be immediately removed. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 16:24, 10 June 2010 (EDT)

I've again placed a one-day block on this account for the same reasons as noted above. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 13:13, 21 June 2010 (EDT)

I've sent the following email to wrsol.com, which appears to be the company making these edits:

Hello,

I am an administrator of the wikivoyage.org web site, the web's largest open travel web site. Over the past several months there have been numerous edits from an IP address at your company (74.7.154.242) that violate our site policies and have led to discussions about completely blacklisting all hotels added by your company. Since this would benefit neither you nor us we would ask you to please STOP placing spammy, marketing content on our site as outlined at http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User_talk:74.7.154.242.

If you could confirm receipt of this message by leaving a note on the http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User_talk:74.7.154.242 page we would be grateful.

I received the following response this morning:

Ryan,

I attempted to submit a note on the page that you linked to and could not so I am replying back to the address you sent your message from.

We apologize for any violations we may have made. When looking at other hotel listings posted on wikivoyage pages we thought we were following the guidelines. Our information is not spam but to prevent further problems we have taken wikivoyage off our list of submissions.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Warm regards,

Lauren Stevens | Marketing Coordinator

Here is some additional follow-up. Now that they are engaged hopefully future communication can occur on-wiki:

Thank you Lauren. I've posted a copy of your message on the http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User_talk:74.7.154.242 page so that other users of the Wikivoyage site are aware of your response. In the future, if you choose to add listings to Wikivoyage.org then we're willing to work with you, but a key goal of our site is to avoid becoming a tool for advertising since we want to make sure that information on our site can be trusted by travelers. Our http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/SEO page contains some guidelines designed to help marketing companies make useful contributions.

I've lifted the editing block that had been placed on your company - if you have any questions feel free to leave messages either on the http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User_talk:74.7.154.242 page or (for general discussions) in our http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Pub general discussion page.

Thanks Ryan-

WRS Team, let's look at the SEO guidelines and figure out a way to work within them.

Despite the emails above we continue to get inappropriate edits from this company, so I've asked them to stop editing on Wikivoyage:

Hi Linda,

Wikivoyage.org continues to receive inappropriate edits from this address, with no attention given to comments from editors or other attempts to work collaboratively. Please remove us from your list of submissions.

What you need to do edit

After the correspondence above I was hopeful that edits from this company would change, but per this edit that hasn't happened. To be very clear: READ SEO AND FOLLOW THOSE GUIDELINES. Quit adding listings that read like something straight out of a marketing brochure and stop using first-person pronouns like "we", "our", etc. Include proper price ranges. Create an account. Until you follow these very simple guidelines you remain on a revert-on-sight basis. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 16:07, 24 June 2010 (EDT)

Hi Ryan,
My apoligies if the submission from yesterday flagged your system. I have looked through the talk articles as well as guidelines for marketers if submissions are to occur. I have passed this along to our SEO team and will be ensuring the team is aware of the submission rules. Can we have our IP address reinstated?
thanks, Brandon
Hi Brandon. Your IP block is only short term. If you create an account, like is recommended, you can use that account for your conforming edits. --Inas (talk) 02:44, 20 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

This is the discussion page for an anonymous user who has not created an account yet, or who does not use it. We therefore have to use the numerical IP address to identify them. Such an IP address can be shared by several users. If you are an anonymous user and feel that irrelevant comments have been directed at you, please create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other anonymous users.
