User talk:Jonboy/archive

Hello Jonboy!

Welcome to Wikivoyage. Please take a sec to look at our copyleft and policies and guidelines, but feel free to plunge forward and edit some pages. Scanning the Manual of style, especially the article templates, can give you a good idea of how we like articles formatted. If you need help, check out Project:Help, and if you need some info not on there, post a message in the travellers' pub.

Thank you for contributing to Silver Spring, Istanbul, San Diego, a project page and generally keeping the wiki tidy. --(WT-en) Huttite 19:23, 30 Dec 2005 (EST)

And a hearty welcome from me too — housekeeping after silly vandals is a chore and I for one very much appreciate you chipping in. (WT-en) Jpatokal 12:34, 15 Feb 2006 (EST)

Thanks for telling me about WikiTravel, I've already added an item to Maui. --(WT-en) Wwc 13:11, 8 March 2006 (EST)

edit

I was told by other WikIpedia editors that the proper place to post Travel Guide links was the external Links section of WikiTRAVEL.

Hello anonymous user. Could you cite these discussions? According to Project:External_links, "In particular, avoid links to other travel guides." By the way, I encourage you to create an account; it makes it easier to communicate and to contribute in general. 192.31.192.5 12:03, 14 Feb 2006 (EST) (Really (WT-en) Jonboy...why do I always get logged out without being notified? sigh.)

Math is hard

Actually, that's 7000 articles larger than a certain size. I'm not sure how to tell how many too-small pages exist.

Keep up the great work! -- (WT-en) Colin 02:31, 17 Feb 2006 (EST)

Math is easy; reading is hard. Had not read the description of how the stats were calculated. It was a secondary point to my battle against External Links sections, so has been removed. Thanks for pointing it out! (WT-en) Jonboy 12:31, 17 Feb 2006 (EST)

Nice work

edit

Keep up the super-great work! And I appreciate that you keep your eye out for the "tourist != traveller" -- I think that's an important aspect of what makes Wikivoyage different from other guides. There's room for everywhere here! (WT-en) Majnoona 10:35, 20 Feb 2006 (EST)

Thanks! I end up plenty of places visiting family or on business that I wouldn't consider dream vacation spots, but I appreciate any travel info there. (WT-en) Jonboy 10:38, 20 Feb 2006 (EST)
Same here... And thanks for doing some welcomes too! It's always nice to get those up quick... (WT-en) Majnoona 13:05, 21 Feb 2006 (EST)

Please don't delete this collection of links, which is not spam, but relevant background information. If you want the external link section out, then move the links into appropriate sections of the article, instead of just deleting them. (WT-en) Wesopa 06:09, 26 February 2006 (EST)

I moved them all myself, but the above request stands, for other articles. (WT-en) Wesopa 07:21, 26 February 2006 (EST)

Please take a look at What not to link to. In particular, the sentence "We should have travel information in Wikivoyage, not linked to from Wikivoyage." While I recognize in some cases I have been overly zealous in getting rid of external links, in 90% of the cases these links fall into the category of linked-to information. In about 10% of the cases, they belong somewhere else in the article (eg attraction listing). In those cases, i) I will try to move things within the article instead of deleting them but ii) feel free to put them back. (WT-en) Jonboy 09:26, 26 February 2006 (EST)

Hi...I don't understand why when i created a new link telluride luxury rentals you are taking it out and just leaving it bold...i also do not like the footnote i think it is more clear and simple to have Go To Website instead of a footnote that no one knows what it is until they click on it...please advise...thanks! —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Telluride (talkcontribs) 15:45, 10 May 2006 (EST)

Take a look at Project:External_links#Links_in_listings to see how we do things. If you disagree, please bring up your objection on that article's talk page -- you'll find plenty of people to discuss that with you. Also, take a look at Project:What_is_an_article? to see why I unlinked "Telluride Rentals". It's not an article, so therefore shouldn't have a wikilink. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 15:49, 10 May 2006 (EDT)

Hey.. I just modified a link to make it actually linkable, and y'all reverted the change and turned it into a footnote style link.. at first I was puzzled until I read your style guide on external links.. perhaps change this page to reflect your footnote style suggestions

As this is the model I followed to make the external link.. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 200.24.126.170 (talkcontribs) 17:11, 31 March 2006 (EST)

Hi! Thanks for your contributions. You may want to create a user account to make things easier for yourself (and those who want to communicate with you). Project:External_links contains our external links policy. Project:Wiki markup is more of a "how to" than a "what to do" page. But if you think it should include information on the preferred format, please bring that up on its talk page. (WT-en) Jonboy 16:19, 31 March 2006 (EST)

Hi Jonboy, I see you've removed my links to Wikipedia from the articles about Vienna and Bratislava. Is it because they don't link to a primary source? If I link directly to archaeological park's website, would it be OK? (WT-en) VladoD 05:55, 19 April 2006 (EDT)

Yes, exactly! We're looking for links to the sites themselves, not to Wikipedia (other than the standard Wikipedia link per article). -- (WT-en) Jonboy 09:12, 19 April 2006 (EDT)
OK, I've got one more question about licensing. I would like to create a new Wikivoyage article about this archaeological park. However, I would like to use large parts of the article at Wikipedia. I know it is not possible in general, but the article at Wikipedia is my own work. Is it in this case possible to use the material from Wikipedia? (WT-en) VladoD 11:18, 19 April 2006 (EDT)
Yes! As the author, you can decide to "dual-license" your content. Just be careful to use your content, and not a later version that somebody else has added to. Also, please take a look at Project:What is an article? to see if the park qualifies, in particular the "can you sleep there?" test. If it doesn't, your contributions would still be welcome at the page belonging to the city nearest the park (the one visitors would stay at.) -- (WT-en) Jonboy 11:24, 19 April 2006 (EDT)
Thanks for your help :-) (WT-en) VladoD 11:46, 19 April 2006 (EDT)

List length

edit

Um, unless I'm missing something, it isn't exactly Wikivoyage "policy" that lists not exceed 9 items; it's merely one of those style things, as well as good practice just because of the human tendency to get confused if dealing with lots of things at once. However, if you check the manual of style, I think you'll find that it contains lists a lot longer than that, as do many of the other project pages. Sometimes long lists just can't be avoided without giving something inappropriately short shrift. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 12:04, 30 April 2006 (EDT)

My reason for being picky about referring to a "policy" of longer lists is that newcomers have a tendency to view pronouncements like this as oracular, particularly when they're coming from an admin or other highly active contributor. I think the actual "policy" is: get the information on there somewhere, and then edits will gradually get it into the appropriate configuration. In the case of cities, that's probably best done via setting up some (sub)regions, so that one big glob of real estate with 20 cities can become 3 regions with 5 or 6, plus the "major" city or two in that big glob. Once that's done, purging the original list becomes reasonable. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 08:55, 2 May 2006 (EDT)

Reverts for Adventure Smith Explorations

edit

Hi Jonboy - you reverted all of the edits of Special:Contributions/71.128.152.3, apparently someone who works for Adventure Smith Explorations, and gave no reason for it. Aside from bad formatting I didn't see anything wrong with them - they were probably done for advertising, but it still seems like good info and doesn't violate any policy that I'm aware of. Can you either un-revert those changes or include a message on the talk pages as to why they were done? Thanks! -- (WT-en) Ryan 12:03, 2 May 2006 (EDT)

Good call. I saw essentially the same text going into a bunch of articles and alarm bells went off in my head. I should have looked at the web site first. (I don't think we want everyone who offers a tour to a particular country to stick info in, but specialist tour guides like this make sense.) I think I've reverted all of my edits (except one where they de-MoS'ed an existing link). -- (WT-en) Jonboy 12:16, 2 May 2006 (EDT)
No problem - even reverting their changes might have been OK, but without any explanation it confused me and I'm sure would confuse the editor who was adding that information. My fear is that simply reverting a change without explanation causes an otherwise well-intentioned user not to contribute in the future, and the edits made by this company do seem to have added useful information for travelers to each of the destinations edited. -- (WT-en) Ryan 12:22, 2 May 2006 (EDT)
Yeah, it's tricky. The rollback button takes a couple of seconds. I just saw someone add their tour company info 3 times to Bhutan...all in the wrong place. It took me 5-10 minutes to fix it correctly. I'm not sure the trade-off is between not explaining a revert of information that might be helpful and getting sucked into a good bit of research and editing to incorporate that info properly. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 13:04, 2 May 2006 (EDT)

... for noting that vandalism on my user page. That was a grave insult. I'd appreciate it if you can warn/block that user. Doesn't seem like such a user will be of great use. (WT-en) Daniel575 2 May 2006

Wikivoyage prides itself on not blocking users or IP addresses. I am quite surprised myself, but it seems to work. In particular, that IP address hasn't made any changes since then. I'll add your user page to my watch list just in case, but we seem to do a good job of spotting vandals. (Any edit to a user page that isn't by that user draws my suspicion.) -- (WT-en) Jonboy 16:56, 2 May 2006 (EDT)

Thank so much for taking the trouble guiding me at wikivoyage. As I am the owner of travel touch which is a Proper Web and cellular Destination guide I can contribute more then 12,000 attractions. Sleep. Eat, taxies and embassies' and more . I am giving you full permission to use Travel touch database only for credit. If you do not like my contribution- fine. If you need legal send me email. I do it for my own soul and not for any money

At the bottom of each page you can see "Based on work by...", which is our mechanism for giving credit. You can use your user page to point people back to your web site. If you want to link to your web site directly from the text of articles, unfortuantely, that is against wikivoyage policies. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 16:26, 27 August 2006 (EDT)
Thank you, I didn't find anything like this in wikivoyage policies. can you point me to? should i contact the mangment? please advice —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Samyaniv (talkcontribs)
Take a look at Project:External_links to see our policy against linking to non-primary sources in the text of the article. If you'd like to discuss these sorts of things with a more general audience (including other admins and Wikivoyage's founders), I suggest Project:Travellers' pub. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 18:14, 27 August 2006 (EDT)

Why?

edit

Why should Bus travel in Israel be forbidden, if Rail travel in North America, Rail travel in Europe and Discount airlines in Europe are allowed???? I am going nuts here. If my article is deleted -- an article which has cost me hours of work -- while these other articles ARE permitted, this is simply antisemitic discrimination. Why is my article about Israel forbidden, while these other articles are allowed??? (WT-en) Daniel575 30 May 2006

If you take a look at those articles you'll noticed that they don't actually list every rail line in North America or every flighpath in Europe. It's the content, not the place. And if you take a look at the Project:Deletion log you'll see that we delete a lot of stuff-- including, recently New South Wales by rail, Eurail pass, Maine outlet shopping, and several dozen other travel topics. Really, it's not just you! (heck, two of my travel topics were deleted too !) (WT-en) Majnoona 00:20, 30 May 2006 (EDT)
For the record, I had nothing to do with the vfd. I don't have much to add, since I'm ambivalent about the whole way we treat travel topics. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 21:27, 3 June 2006 (EDT)

edit

I love it. This was a good idea, and I've been using it all over the place. Thanks! --(WT-en) Evan 17:54, 6 July 2006 (EDT)

Hi - I restored the Discount airlines in Europe link to Europe#Get in as it seemed useful and relevant to me and I didn't see an obvious reason for the revert. If I've missed something then please revert my change. -- (WT-en) Ryan 14:05, 3 August 2006 (EDT)

My reasoning was that we have a way to include "relevant and useful" links -- the {{related}} template. I don't see a reason to include it both places. Thoughts? -- (WT-en) Jonboy 14:20, 3 August 2006 (EDT)
My bad, didn't see it over there. It would be nice if we had some way of making the "related", Wikipedia, Dmoz and other links more prominent... -- (WT-en) Ryan 14:22, 3 August 2006 (EDT)

Is it the content or the format of the external links in this articles that was a problem? (i have had a look at [[1]]). You never left a reason... (WT-en) StephP 17:12, 8 October 2006 (EDT)

It was the location. Looks great now! Thanks for contributing! -- (WT-en) Jonboy 12:09, 9 October 2006 (EDT)

When you were in Cologne by any chance were you able to venture down into Bonn and snap any photos? -- (WT-en) Andrew H. (Sapphire) 20:30, 2 December 2006 (EST)

Sadly, no. It was a really quick trip. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 05:11, 9 December 2006 (EST)

We apparently noticed this article at the same time and took different actions to deal with it. I suggest that it not be merged into Miami but rather used as impetus to get the city broken into districts, which is long overdue. Miami qualifies as a "Huge city" under our criteria and really needs a district structure. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 09:15, 14 December 2006 (EST)

Your solution seems better. I was looking for a quick way of highlighting this misplaced article, since I didn't have time to deal with it in detail. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 09:17, 14 December 2006 (EST)

Hello. You have deleted the link to in-west-indies.com. I agree you do not accept links to booking engines but - i did not link to such a page - i linked to a page giving lots of information about Martinique - the site has plenty of categories and information to offer to visitors - i did not break the rule of the linking policy, did i ? - in-west-indies.com is an informational website aboout french and english Carribbean culture.. Could you give me more explanation about your decision ? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 82.234.187.145 (talkcontribs) 21 Dec 2006

Patrolling edits

Do you know if there's a way to patrol several edits in a row? I usually open a new browser tab for each diff and check them one by one, but I guess that mustn't be easiest way. Thanks, (WT-en) Ricardo (Rmx) 22:35, 25 December 2006 (EST)

Make sure you have "enhanced recent changes" in your preferences, then you can click on the word "changes" to patrol them all at once. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 22:42, 25 December 2006 (EST)

How soon we forget. The consensus was to keep. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 07:42, 28 December 2006 (EST)

I thought that vote only applied to whether or not to delete it. If I've violated policy, I'll put it back. Also, the discussion on the vfd was one "I don't object to deleting or redirecting this" (you), one keep & redirect (me) and one "Keep, at least for now". I'll start a discussion on Talk:Maryland to see if we want to re-vamp the Maryland hierarchy to include counties. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 12:07, 28 December 2006 (EST)

I have compiled a comprehensive list of places to eat in (WT-en) Gaithersburg and it includes Kentlands. Please pick a few or all to add to Gaithersburg and I will delete the list when you are done. You are more familiar with the area, so I would prefer you make the selection. Also, I am not sure how you want to address Kentlands in the Gaithersbug article, so if you can help with that it would be appreciated. Let me know if you need me to do anything else to help. Thanks, -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 06:59, 30 December 2006 (EST)

I'll talk to my wife (who has friends there) and to her friends and figure it out. Thanks. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 11:28, 30 December 2006 (EST)
Well, I thought you could help with it... I didn't mean to dump in on you, but I figured you would want to be involved. So, I will finish it up if you have other priorities. It is really my fault for jumping on Kentlands. Thanks for you help and all you do for Wikivoyage! -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 12:12, 30 December 2006 (EST)
No, really -- no problem! I just thought it better to ask people who travel in that area more than I do. After a brief conversation with my wife, she recommended a place in Germantown, which needs both an article and a disambig, so I deferred it until when I have a little more free time (probably one of the next three days). -- (WT-en) Jonboy 17:39, 30 December 2006 (EST)

Minnesota: Cities

edit

Is the number of cities for a given state limited to nine? I was surprised to see your edit in Minnesota. (WT-en) Spottacus 15:57, 15 January 2007 (EST)

Nine cities isn't a hard and fast rule, but it's the default upper limit. See Wikivoyage_talk:Region_article_template#How_many_is_nine. for an recent attempt to hash it out. As (WT-en) someone said there, "7±2 is a rule of thumb that should be balanced against other criteria, not an iron edict to be obeyed above all others." If we don't enforce it, though, people will start adding their favorite cities and pretty soon the list will be 11, 12, 23... -- (WT-en) Jonboy 16:04, 15 January 2007 (EST)

Diplomacy

edit

I certainly agree that your recent contribution to USA is a lot less inflammatory (and remains truthful). The question is, do we necessarily need neutered language throughout articles?

I would suggest that some of the defining characteristics of the USA (as opposed to near neighbours such as Canada, say) might be considered a little provocative:

  • Great inequalities of wealth
  • A huge crime and punishment infrastructure
  • Myopic media

Do we really want Wikivoyage to be so anodyne and neutered?

It'll end up like Wikipedia...(WT-en) Gaimhreadhan (kiwiexile at DMOZ) • 12:24, 28 March 2007 (EDT)

Two hotels were added to the "sleep" section of Torquay UK page and you deleted them with the comment "this site does not exist to boost your google rank" - no, it exists to provide information about Torquay, thus adding hotels in Torquay to the sleep section is adding value to the site. Please put the links back. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 82.32.185.62 (talkcontribs) 23 June 2007

I didn't delete them. I changed them from an uninformative style designed to boost your google rank -- "Self Catered Luxury Holiday Home in Torquay" (Of course it's in Torquay, it's the Torquay page) -- to one that is more helpful to the traveler and is in compliance with our manual of style. --(WT-en) Jonboy 21:51, 23 June 2007 (EDT)

Thanks for putting them back. You might be interested to learn that "self catering holiday home" would not "boost my google rank" any more or less than using the name of the hotel. And yes, you did delete them - it says so in the history. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 82.32.185.62 (talkcontribs) 24 June 2007

No I didn't. --(WT-en) Jonboy 18:35, 24 June 2007 (EDT)

Apologies, I can see now that the user with IP address 212.84.182.136 is deleting them. He/she deleted them again today and I've put them back - is it possible you can block him/her? If you look through, it is the same address every time the "sleep" section is deleted. In fact, his only contribution to the site is deleting my links: http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/212.84.182.136 —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 86.128.175.248 (talkcontribs) 28 June 2007

Also, I've added some content to the page in the other sections, using edited bits from the wikipedia entry for Torquay as well as adding my own parts - have I done this in the correct format?

Many thanks!

It doesn't matter what your link says it does help with your page rank!Change your link to a more informative link where people have the choice of accommodation, rather than directing them straight to you (or your client). Why not direct it to a site like the english riviera(tourist information)!?? Surely this will give the public more choice, and then if your site is on their directory they can choose to click on your link! I will stop deleting the links, but i will add in some more information about other accommodation resources. Thanks —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 212.84.182.136 (talkcontribs) 2 July 2007

It is more informative to have a list of hotels/flats - look at other towns pages (for example, Exeter or Plymouth). The English Riviera website has an incomplete list of paid for advertisements, whereas this list could eventually become more complete and independent as anyone is free to add their establishment. 81.155.213.2 05:22, 5 July 2007 (EDT)

I have made some proposals to gain a concensus for ammending the 9 cities list to make it more accurate as it is currently inconsistent with the latest data regarding tourists to uk cities. Ideally I would like feedback from some of the people who have previously been involved in this discussion before making any changes. Can you please provide some feedback to my discussion proposals ( located under the "the old city problem", highlighted in bold "new data for 2007"

many thanks Dan --(WT-en) Daniel robinson 14:53, 2 November 2007 (EDT)

Why did you remove our information from the cities that we do business in?

We are the leading provider of luxury vacation rentals in BC. We live here, we have offices here and we provide both excellent resources for accommodations as well as information about the area in general. Why did you remove the updates I added yesterday? If anyone should be listed there, we have the right to be.

Explain yourself please.

On the Vancouver BC page, a condo we have represented is listed right above us. This unit is in the process of being sold and might not do vacation rentals in the future. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) emvr (talkcontribs) 7 Dec 2007
