I was told by other WikIpedia editors that the proper place to post Travel Guide links was the external Links section of WikiTRAVEL.

Please take a look at What not to link to. In particular, the sentence "We should have travel information in Wikivoyage, not linked to from Wikivoyage." While I recognize in some cases I have been overly zealous in getting rid of external links, in 90% of the cases these links fall into the category of linked-to information. In about 10% of the cases, they belong somewhere else in the article (eg attraction listing). In those cases, i) I will try to move things within the article instead of deleting them but ii) feel free to put them back. (WT-en) Jonboy 09:26, 26 February 2006 (EST)

If you disagree, please bring up your objection on that article's talk page -- you'll find plenty of people to discuss that with you. OK, I've got one more question about licensing. I would like to create a new Wikivoyage article about this archaeological park. However, I would like to use large parts of the article at Wikipedia. Yes! As the author, you can decide to "dual-license" your content. Just be careful to use your content, and not a later version that somebody else has added to. Also, please take a look at Project:What is an article? to see if the park qualifies, in particular the "can you sleep there?" test. List length

Um, unless I'm missing something, it isn't exactly Wikivoyage "policy" that lists not exceed 9 items; it's merely one of those style things, as well as good practice just because of the human tendency to get confused if dealing with lots of things at once. However, if you check the manual of style, I think you'll find that it contains lists a lot longer than that, as do many of the other project pages. Sometimes long lists just can't be avoided without giving something inappropriately short shrift. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 12:04, 30 April 2006 (EDT)

My reason for being picky about referring to a "policy" of longer lists is that newcomers have a tendency to view pronouncements like this as oracular, particularly when they're coming from an admin or other highly active contributor. I think the actual "policy" is: get the information on there somewhere, and then edits will gradually get it into the appropriate configuration. In the case of cities, that's probably best done via setting up some (sub)regions, so that one big glob of real estate with 20 cities can become 3 regions with 5 or 6, plus the "major" city or two in that big glob. Reverts for Adventure Smith Explorations

Hi Jonboy - you reverted all of the edits of Special:Contributions/71.128.152.3, apparently someone who works for Adventure Smith Explorations, and gave no reason for it. Aside from bad formatting I didn't see anything wrong with them - they were probably done for advertising, but it still seems like good info and doesn't violate any policy that I'm aware of. Good call. I saw essentially the same text going into a bunch of articles and alarm bells went off in my head. I should have looked at the web site first. (I don't think we want everyone who offers a tour to a particular country to stick info in, but specialist tour guides like this make sense.) No problem - even reverting their changes might have been OK, but without any explanation it confused me and I'm sure would confuse the editor who was adding that information. My fear is that simply reverting a change without explanation causes an otherwise well-intentioned user not to contribute in the future, and the edits made by this company do seem to have added useful information for travelers to each of the destinations edited. -- (WT-en) Ryan 12:22, 2 May 2006 (EDT)

Yeah, it's tricky. The rollback button takes a couple of seconds. I just saw someone add their tour company info 3 times to Bhutan...all in the wrong place. It took me 5-10 minutes to fix it correctly. I'm not sure the trade-off is between not explaining a revert of information that might be helpful and getting sucked into a good bit of research and editing to incorporate that info properly. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 13:04, 2 May 2006 (EDT)

Wikivoyage prides itself on not blocking users or IP addresses. I am quite surprised myself, but it seems to work. In particular, that IP address hasn't made any changes since then. I'll add your user page to my watch list just in case, but we seem to do a good job of spotting vandals. At the bottom of each page you can see "Based on work by...", which is our mechanism for giving credit. You can use your user page to point people back to your web site. Why?

Why should Bus travel in Israel be forbidden, if Rail travel in North America, Rail travel in Europe and Discount airlines in Europe are allowed???? I am going nuts here. If my article is deleted -- an article which has cost me hours of work -- while these other articles ARE permitted, this is simply antisemitic discrimination. If you take a look at those articles you'll noticed that they don't actually list every rail line in North America or every flighpath in Europe. It's the content, not the place. And if you take a look at the Project:Deletion log you'll see that we delete a lot of stuff-- including, recently New South Wales by rail, Eurail pass, Maine outlet shopping, and several dozen other travel topics. Discount airlines in Europe

Little havana

We apparently noticed this article at the same time and took different actions to deal with it. I suggest that it not be merged into Miami but rather used as impetus to get the city broken into districts, which is long overdue. Minnesota: Cities

Nine cities isn't a hard and fast rule, but it's the default upper limit. See Wikivoyage_talk:Region_article_template#How_many_is_nine. for an recent attempt to hash it out. As (WT-en) someone said there, "7±2 is a rule of thumb that should be balanced against other criteria, not an iron edict to be obeyed above all others." If we don't enforce it, though, people will start adding their favorite cities and pretty soon the list will be 11, 12, 23... -- (WT-en) Jonboy 16:04, 15 January 2007 (EST)

Diplomacy

I certainly agree that your recent contribution to USA is a lot less inflammatory (and remains truthful). The question is, do we necessarily need neutered language throughout articles?

I would suggest that some of the defining characteristics of the USA (as opposed to near neighbours such as Canada, say) might be considered a little provocative:

• Great inequalities of wealth
• A huge crime and punishment infrastructure
• Myopic media

Do we really want Wikivoyage to be so anodyne and neutered?

Why have you deleted my links

Two hotels were added to the "sleep" section of Torquay UK page and you deleted them with the comment "this site does not exist to boost your google rank" - no, it exists to provide information about Torquay, thus adding hotels in Torquay to the sleep section is adding value to the site. I didn't delete them. I changed them from an uninformative style designed to boost your google rank -- "Self Catered Luxury Holiday Home in Torquay" (Of course it's in Torquay, it's the Torquay page) -- to one that is more helpful to the traveler and is in compliance with our manual of style. --(WT-en) Jonboy 21:51, 23 June 2007 (EDT)

Thanks for putting them back. You might be interested to learn that "self catering holiday home" would not "boost my google rank" any more or less than using the name of the hotel. It doesn't matter what your link says it does help with your page rank!Change your link to a more informative link where people have the choice of accommodation, rather than directing them straight to you (or your client). Why not direct it to a site like the english riviera(tourist information)!?? Surely this will give the public more choice, and then if your site is on their directory they can choose to click on your link! I will stop deleting the links, but i will add in some more information about other accommodation resources. It is more informative to have a list of hotels/flats - look at other towns pages (for example, Exeter or Plymouth). The English Riviera website has an incomplete list of paid for advertisements, whereas this list could eventually become more complete and independent as anyone is free to add their establishment. 81.155.213.2 05:22, 5 July 2007 (EDT)

I have made some proposals to gain a concensus for ammending the 9 cities list to make it more accurate as it is currently inconsistent with the latest data regarding tourists to uk cities. Why did you remove our information from the cities that we do business in?

We are the leading provider of luxury vacation rentals in BC. We live here, we have offices here and we provide both excellent resources for accommodations as well as information about the area in general. Why did you remove the updates I added yesterday? If anyone should be listed there, we have the right to be.

Explain yourself please.
