COTW?

Design

The World

So, our geographic hierarchy is rooted at the continent level, and gets kind of fuzzy there. Would it be nutso-crazy-bonkers to move the Main Page to the World, and have that be the default travel guide entry page? --(WT-en) Evan 11:49, 28 April 2006 (EDT)

All current (and plausible in the next several decades) forms of space tourism are still gravitationally bound to the planet, so that's arguably still part of the World. We just can't say that Outer Space IsIn World. :) - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 08:40, 30 April 2006 (EDT)

"World" is itself kindof fuzzy, being that it's a generic term, and thus a moveable framework, think "Continent". What about using Earth which has otherwise been long-since relegated to homages to Duglas Adams? That's a lot more specific, and allows for future growth. Remember those Cobol programmers who were sure their work would be superceded before the year 2000.

Actually, using "Earth" for the main page would paint us into a corner more quickly, because I'm sure that word will never refer to anything more than just this wet rock we're on. But the meaning of "world" will probably continue to evolve, encompassing geosynchronous orbit, and the entire Earth-Luna system, as those also become "part of our world", so to speak. Words such as "Mundo", "Monde", "Welt", etc. are good all-inclusive analogs in other languages. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 16:10, 30 April 2006 (EDT)
