Maps

Unfortunately we can't trace copyrighted base files, since that would make the resulting map a "derivative work." I agree that this is pretty ridiculous, but then again, I have a lot of objections to current U.S. intellectual property laws. Private mapmakers actually introduce errors into their maps, just to be able to catch copyright infringement! If you're having trouble finding a base to work with for a specific map, let me know—I think I'm pretty much familiar with all possible base sources for maps. --(WT-en) Peter ^Talk 15:19, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

Edmonton Map

Hi, Shaund, I thought you MIGHT be interested in a small project. See the (I think) last topic in Talk:Edmonton, about maps. Tell me what you think. (I am putting this in my talk page, as well) OH THANK YOU SHAUND...YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY YOU'VE MADE ME SERIOUSLY! OH THANK GOD! LOL...anyways I know you won't put roads in first but you need to put in the river and the city boundaries! OK? Thanks agaiN! I don't mind that it takes a few weeks, it's just a load off because I know I'd suck and I'm busy with the "written" part ;), plus other stuff I like to do (going out, Playing SimCity, hanging out with the people I love :)) this is just such a load off! Oh thank you Shaund! And I will add the districts borders to the main page and the districts, but how would you go about describing if say it is "bound by the north by one road, but then its northern side goes in a southwest direction on another road, then a east-west road again, just further south, etc."?¿ Thank you so much for the advice as well, I am working hard to get all of them USEABLE...then I will do the main article to fit the districts, then I'll be more specific to the manual of style and try and make 'em guides! The Edmonton Map information!

Hi, Shaund! It's what you've been waiting for-the information for the Edmonton district's map ahah! I know, I know you were thinking that all-inclusive trip to Miami! NOOO! Haha, anyways, here's all the information:

Edmonton, as you know, is having 8 districts:

• Central - bound by: Groat Road in the west from the river until 118th Avenue. The northern boundaries are 118th Avenue which turns into Kingsway Ave. until 111 Avenue, then the northern border takes a north-south boundary at 118th Ave and 97 St. of 97th Street until the Yellowhhead (16) Highway and that continues it's northern border until Wayne Gretzky Drive. It's eastern border is Wayne Gretzky Drive between Yellowhead and river. The southern boundary is the North Saskatchewan River between Groat Road and Wayne Gretzky Drive.

• East Central - basically east of the Wayne Gretzky Drive, south of Yellowhead, west of the Highway 216/Anthony Henday Dr. (aka eastern boundaries of the city) and north of the river. Basically that!

• South Central - western boundary is the river. Northern boundary is the river until 98 Avenue then that's its norhtern boundary until Connor's Road (Which is rightaway) then at a traffic circle it continues as 83 St. Oh boy, I just did it's eastern boundary, heh. Then continuuuing the eastern boudary along 82nd/Whyte Avenue until 75th St. 75th St. until Argyll Road. Then the southern boundary is Argyll Road which turns into 63 Avenue then joins up with 61 Avenue west of 104th Street/Calgary Trl. Contuinue on that until 113 St. 113 St becomes the border until Belgravia Road/Fox Drive which is the border until Whitemud Drive, which is the border (for a teeeny bit)until the river! Phewph! Confusing?

• North - start with the southern boundary which begins in the west as Stony Plain Road until Mayfield Road (north-south road)which then turns into 111(west-east) Avenue which is the border until Groat Road which is the border until 118th Avenue that turns into Kingwway Avenue. Kingsway is then the border until 111 Ave. which is the border until 97th St. 97th is the border until Yellowhead. Then basically anything north of the Yellowhead is the north end. It's eastern boundary is the city limits north of the Yellowhead. Same with the west. The north aswell. Just make sure you check the city borders properyl :)!

Phew-four more!

• West - the western border is the city limits. The southern border the same. The northern boundary is Stony Plain Road until Mayfield Road which turns into 111 Avenue. That is the border until Groat Road. Groat Road is the eastern boundary until the river, which finishes off being the eastern border all the way south down to the city limits.

• Southwest - Eastern boundary is 99 St. until Whitemud Drive, which is breif in being the border because at 91 St. that becomes the border. 91 St. is the eastern boundary until Anthony Henday Drive. Anthony Henday is brefily the boundary until Calgary Trail, which becomes the boundary until the city limits. Southern borders are the city limits west of Calg. Trail. Western boundary is the North Saskatchewan River until the Whitemud Drive. Whitemud breifly becomes border. Now we're at the northern boder. At Whitemudand Fox Drive, Fox Drive becomes the border which turns into Belgravia Road. At 113 St., 113 St becomes the border until 61 Avenue. Which is the border until it meets up with 63 Avenue which is the border until 99 St.

• East - western boundary is 98th Ave until Connor's Rd. then at a traffic circle it continues as 83 St. Then continuing the eastern boudary along 82nd/Whyte Avenue until 75th St. 75th St. until Argyll Road. Then the southern boundary is Argyll Road which turns into 63 Avenue which is the border until 99 St. 99th is the border until Whitemud Drive. The southern boundary is north of Whitmud Drive, east of 99th. The eastern is the city boundaries-I believe Highway 216. Northern boundary is basically the river until Yellowhead Trl. which is the northern boundary until the eastern city limits. *Sigh*.

• Mill Woods - basically west of 91 Street untilAnthony Henday Drive (highway) which at Calgary Trail, Calgary Trail becomes the western boundary until southern limits. Southern limits is the southern city limits. Northern boundary is Whitemud Dr. east of 91 St. Eastern boundary is city limits.

Ok there, I hhope I was thorough, I was getting tired. If you have any questions ,remember just ask MIIIII. Remember to put in the city limits, I would also like you to grey-out Sherwood Park and Saint Albert (municipalities connected) like the Vancouver map ;)!!!! Also don't forget to PUT IN the river!!!!!!!! Use online maps or bought maps to help you, aswell! To help you further, I saved a map from OpenStreetMaps to give you a different perspective, in case the above was somewhat confusing!

The one below also shows the roads you should put in v2...I know you won't put the roads in rightaway, but soon after the original version is created, please put the roads in(I will help you with that when you decude to do tthat). Just sucks that all the roads in openstreet for Edmonton aren't on there:(!!!! Anyways, how are yeh? How long do you think this will take? One week? I am thinkin' between one and two weeks. edmonton map

3 points about the edmonton map:

• 1 - Beautiful work - really it is fantastic! You should finish labelling the streets.

Noted, although some streets won't get labelled because of space constraints. - Shaund

• 2 - This is the actual sign for Highway Two - it's changed : [6] but still good. Also, you should put NW against all the roads except Ellerslie which would be SW. Remember quadrants!

OK, I'll look up the quadrants. Although why would they all be NW or SW, shouldn't there be NE and SE too??

There isn't a SE because there is no land that would fall under the quadrant for Edmonton. There is a NE, but, there is only a small residential community that falls under it and no major roads as of yet. The vast majority of the city is under NW though, because we didn't have it as Calgary, we didn't have quadrants for such a long time, then we started developing land past 1 St and 1 Ave so the other quadrants needed to be placed, that is why the majority of the city is NW because it is all the land in the city that is from the original road plans. Re the QE2 highway, that image has copyright issues. If there's one floating around that is public domain or compliant with WT licensing standards, I'll use it. - Shaund

• 3 - how do you get those colour things with matching the map for the district. Eg Central is purple so under its descr there is a purple thing. An example is Copenhagen.

Some more edits I noticed are: 76 Street is actually 75 St. You should label Sherwood Park Freeway (the part of Whyte Ave that is yellow road). Put in Groat Road (the part of St Albert Trail south of Yellowhead, labell that). Also label 82nd St. and extend it to around 137 Ave. Also 170 St between Whitemud and St Alb Trail should be yellow, as it is a small freeway. You might want to label it with the "2" also as that section is apart of Highway Two ... although it kind of is a bit iffy in exact markers but basically it's that so you should label it that. Also the "2" Highway south of Whitemud (Calgary Trail) should have the QEII logo I showed you all others are the regular 2. Other than that, just the other points I've said and good job!

Vancouver is definitely a good article and it's cool that you look up to it for Edmonton and Calgary. I believe I was referring to something specific -- the See and Do sections. The main article isn't supposed to have all those listings since Vancouver is a huge city, and sometime in the near future I'll be replacing them with a summary like Chicago has.

And thanks for the links to the pictures of Vancouver and Edmonton. There's some very cool shots of the two cities (and pretty much everywhere I guess) on Flickr. Yaletown

I was wondering if you had some images of Yaletown, Vancouver? If you do, I'd like to see them as I have no images of it myself despite me really liking it and you have awesome images. If you could, please, give your opinion on Talk:Edmonton/Central about Edmonton having a "skyline guide", although Vancouver could have one. Thanks for your kind words about my photographs.

6) What area in Central Van (incl Broadway and Kits) is your favourite (Ie yaletown, west end, coal harbour, 4th ave, broadway, the beaches, gastown, cbd, stnly park, etc.) is your favourite personally?

7) What is the best hotels for under 150$/nigh in Downtown/south central Vancouver that is good quality?

OK, after much delay, here are my answers... (WT-en) Shaund 01:31, 2 December 2008 (EST)

1) Best time weather-wise is typically July-Sept, although Oct and surprisingly, Feb, can also have good weather. Unless you're into rain and the wall of grey cloud, then Nov-Apr is your time (although as I said, Feb can sometimes have surprisingly good weather).

2) Best time stuff-to-do-wise depends on what you want to do. If you want to do snow sports, Jan-Mar is best. Festivals and beach stuff is best July-Aug. Sept-Oct is also good since the crowds are less, although the weather can be a bit cooler.

3) There are lots of festivals in Vancouver, but I'm not up on them (too lazy to cross the harbour to go). I have some friends that rave about Folk Fest in Kits. The Fringe Festival always has interesting fare. I've heard good things about some of the local festivals, but haven't been there so I don't have first hand experience.

4) Wreck Beach can be interesting :) But in terms of real parks, QE Park is nice to wander around (old quarry turned into gardens) and it's the highest point in the city so it gives some views. My favourite park is Lynn Canyon, over in North Van -- it has a free suspension bridge, nice hiking trails and Twin Falls, a pretty spot to look at and the swimming is great on a warm summer day.

5) Not sure why people rave about the Aquarium. I guess it's pretty good, I don't recall seeing too many cities with an aquarium that size. The sea otters are cute. I'm just a bit jaded when it comes to aquariums because one of the first ones I saw with the one in Sydney, which (I think) is way better than Vancouver's.

6) I can't really say which area is my favourite, none of them really stand out in my mind. English Bay/Davie & Denman is interesting because it's got lots of restaurants nearby, it has the beach and lots of people. I always like beaches, so Kits is good too, especially once you get past the really busy beach. 4th Ave is good because it has a number of snowboard shops. But, as I think I mentioned before, I mostly hang out on the North Shore.

7) I'll have to do research on that one.

Also in shopping, is there any unique independant urban areas or do they all have like brands/megachains like Robson (roots, le chateau, lululemon, the bay, mc donalds, arbys, etc.). Hi EE, I like the first and third pictures best. Fairly crisp images and good colours. Something about Hilltop doesn't work for me -- I think I just don't find it a very exciting picture to look it -- there's not much colour variation and it doesn't look quite centered. I think Whyte could do with fewer people in it, it overwhelms the streetscape (which is what I assume you're trying to capture).

Unfortunately, I think I only have one picture of Edmonton -- it's one of those river valley shots where I was trying to capture the downtown skyline. It's not a good shot, I had no zoom, in fact I think the camera wasn't even a 35 mm point and click. I wasn't much interested in photography back then, and probably focused more on sulking because I was being dragged to the West Edm Mall by my parents. Anyways, the city is changing a lot. Even between 2007 and 2008, it is night and day. 2009 will be better. More LRT, new art gallery, more retail, restaurants, more fests, new shopping centres completed, etc. Edmonton is in a turning corner. Now it is not as interesting as Vancouver but it is double the size (van). Anyways, I think you'd like it. Lotta up and coming areas. The urban Sobey's (IGA Marketplace but bigger a little) this year created such a buzz. City Centre Mall I remember was so dull and dead so empty and belch, now I went there quickly this weekend 2 empty storefrontsd and thats it-1 is getting a new retail and the other is still empty. It is such a dramatic change and although it has just chains overall it really is a good mall except it is hard to find enterances/exits so if you go, best to remember where you got in, lol. Do you guys in Van usually get snow like you have been? I know you usually get rain, but do you have a week of s now? It's odd, North America is snowing everywhere, yet Edmonton is just barely below average - LOL. Sorry I ask so many questions on Vancity I just like the city and am plannin on going there next year. Also, where would be some nice gritty areas to look at? Is there any historical neighbourhoods from your opinion that are any good besides Gastown? Any neighbourhoods beside Yaletown that clash the new condos with old warehouses? Sorry I just like places like that generally. We don't get snow like that every year, but we usually see a week or two of snow every couple of years. It's definitely colder than normal though (but nothing compared to what I used to see in Ontario).

As for historical neighbourhoods, Gastown is the oldest part of Vancouver, so nothing is going to be older. I'm not sure if there are any complete neighbourhoods left in New West from the 1800s, there are some individual buildings though. The street I live on in North Van has 12 heritage houses, but there isn't a complete neighbourhood like Gastown.

I'm not sure what other Yaletown-like neighbourhoods are around. They've put a bunch of new condos up near the bus/train station, around Quebec St, Main St and Terminal Ave, that mixes with the rundown buildings in the area. They've been building alot of new condo towers along the Millenium Skytrain line in old semi-industrial areas (but not necessarily warehouses). The Olympic Village that is being built south of False Creek is reclaimed industrial land as well. (WT-en) Shaund 02:10, 20 December 2008 (EST)

Thanks Shaund! Isn't the Woodward's area kind of YT ish cause of the new woodwards condos plus all the historic buildigns. Then again - that area has a lot of crime - and I like gritty areas but not alway high crime. Anyways, I remember they were putting lots of condos up by science world last time i was there. That was my favourite attraction!I find it odd how Edmonton is older than Van but Van has more preserved neighbourhoods and older buildings - I mean we only have a handful of 1800 buildings - like 5 i believe. Woodwards is sort of an extension of what they've done around Scienceworld (those condos are pretty much complete now). They're gradually redeveloping northwards along Main St -- it looks alot better than it did 10 years ago when I first came out here, but I'm not sure it helps solve the crime/homelessness problem in the area.

I don't know the story behind Storyeum. My guess is it was very expensive to run and they simply didn't get enough people in to make a profit. They only had a couple of shows, so it's hard to keep people coming back. It's too bad because it was a very interesting way to present history.

What do I like to do on vacations? Travel, take pictures, relax and enjoy the sunshine. Usually it's a mix of doing some outdoors stuff, looking at some of the historical stuff or other things that are unique about the area, and trying some local food. Hey cool! Thanks very much for the input and you are prob right about Storyeum. What has taken the spot of that? Oh you like photography! That's why your input is so great. There is quite a few phootgenic areas in Edmonton. The best would be the river with towers popping out or if you can get into one of the office towers and look out. Hey, would you go to a spa? Heeheheheeh ... I mean to relax... just joking. Edmonton is Canada's sunniest city - is it sunny a lot around the year in Van? I know that the City of Nanaimo has lots of sunshine. You would probably like Fort Edmonton here in Edmonton, as well as the gritty Boyle area because it was actually the original downtown and has a lot of preserved buildings - guess kind of like Gastown but on a smaller scale and there isn't really any shopping. Edmonton has some great Chinese food and Burger bars. We also got some authentic Italian places. Sounds like you'd like places like China or the Carribean or Africa with all kinds of different foods that aren't typical to Canada. You would have a ball out in our river valley. It's a nice place to walk the trails, or bike, plus you can do some stops to take skyline photos. One of Edmonton's best kept secrets is going in summer and having a picnic in Gallagher Park. Beautiful outdoors with the best view of the skyline. You'd also probably like the Whyte Ave stretch - its a well preserved historic area but still very very vibrant. Shopping, looking at art, trying out neat restaurants, seeing a wide range of people, photogenicness of the pedestrians against the beautiful low rise buildings. If you like food, you would like the Heritage Days and Taste of Edmonton festivals because they have a lot of different food from so many cultures. I was wondering, do you like Victoria? I mean, last time I was there I was soooo bored, but that's mostly cause I really didn't know what to do. What about you? What stuff seems most of interest to you in Edmonton? Have you ever been to Jasper, nice skiing up there ! Also, this may sound odd, but it's not really, do you have an account on OSM? Jasper NP

Hey there.. Noticed the way you routeboxed Jasper NP and just wanted to mention-- if a NP has destination articles inside it, I think we should consider it to be just like a region: we routebox only the lowest level destinations, i.e. towns. Vancouver CC districts

Happy to provide the second opinion, then ;) The sleep sections in the new articles seem perfectly fine to me. CBD-Yaletown's is a little longer than usual, but that seems appropriate (if difficult to map). Thanks also for the fr layer. That'll make my life easier. Usually other contributors organise sublayers like:

- City Names
-- en
-- fr

- Region Names
-- en
-- fr

but I like your way of grouping everything for one language. That's neater.

For the map file names, so far, they are usually named in English like the SVG with language in parenthesis eg "Prairies map (fr).png" instead of "Carte_prairies.png". I can rename yours easily but just let you know for the next ones to be consistent.

• I can't find the SVG version of your map of Alberta. Could you upload it?
• Is this BC SVG map wts:Image:BC_regions_map.svg the latest version matching this PNG wts:Image:BC_regions_2010.png? (there is no direct link to the original SVG)
• I don't know why but I always have trouble with the road signs on your maps. I'm using Inkscape from Linux Ubuntu and they are either invisible like for BC or shifted like for Saskatchewan. Are you using a special layer for them? Are you using the DejaVu Sans fonts?

Re:Vancouver

To be fair, I visited Vancouver only once and it was almost two years ago, but I recall getting quite a bit of use out of the Wikivoyage guide before I left. It was quite useful for helping me focus on what to see - I certainly wouldn't have gone to QE Park if there wasn't that stellar picture of it in the UBC-South article, and I'm glad I made the side trip to see it!

I do have photos from my trip, but most of them are...well, honestly just not that good. It was quite cloudy the few days I went, so I think they would look rather gloomy compared to the shots that are up now. Actually, a few of my shots are already up - the pics of the cruise ship, the SkyTrain, and the UBC clock tower on the main page, as well as the poutine shot in the CBD-Yaletown article (my god, that was delicious) and the anthropology museum shot in UBC are also mine. That said, I have a couple of really good ones of the skyline in Yaletown and Stanley Park which are a little sunnier, so I can share those if you like.
