Wikivoyage talk:How to create a user account
To Evan: Hi, I'm that Hans from the Peru section. I already have tried to get a login, and it seems that I have. But I don't see any difference. My modifications of the articles are still listet with my IP instead of my login name and I never have been asked to write my user page.
Could their have occured a problem or is their something I didn't understand. Do you athenticate the loged in users with cookies? Maybe, I have blocked them.
Hans
- Yes, the authentication is with cookies. I'm not sure of the content of the cookies, but I can tell you that we won't do anything evil with them. I'm pretty sure it's just a session ID that keys into your user account on the server side. The cookie name is PHPSESSID, and it might actually be a PHP thing rather than a MediaWiki thing.
- If you can selectively enable cookies in your browser, or whatever you use to block them (I use Privoxy, myself, and have an exception line in my Privoxy config for wikivoyage.org), that's fine. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, please feel free to continue contributing to Wikivoyage without a user account -- that's totally fine. Last thing: make sure you try using the login page to log in. -- (WT-en) Evan 19:12, 5 Sep 2003 (PDT)
- Thank you Evan, I have enabled the Wikivoyage cookies in my browser (Mozilla). All works fine. (WT-en) Hansm 05:35, 2003 Sep 6 (PDT)
User Name Characters
editThe advice on this page says about a username: It can have letters and numbers, but no spaces or punctuation marks.
I do not believe that is correct. A username should only have letters and numbers but it can have spaces or underscores (_), which are seen as the same character, as well as most other pubctuation marks. However, the one character that any user name should NOT have is an ampersand (&) character as that character is used to separate the GET variables in a URL and WILL cause the username to be incorrectly interpreted and WILL make the User and User Talk pages difficult to access.
The problem is that the MediaWiki software does not check usernames for validity. - (WT-en) Huttite 03:53, 7 February 2009 (EST)
Unified log-in for wikivoyage.org
editAs I use more than a dozen wikis of Wikimedia where unified log-in allows one username and password to log in and out without registering at each wiki, I wonder if we can also have the same feature for wikivoyage.org as I would also like to edit Wikivoyage Shared and Chinese Wikivoyage, but no unified log-in here is discouraging and inconvenient.(WT-en) Jusjih 11:58, 27 January 2011 (EST)
- It would be a great feature, but unfortunately, the server side of WT is very nearly unmaintained by its owners. — (WT-en) D. Guillaime 13:28, 27 January 2011 (EST)
WTS links need updating
editThere are two red WTS links that need updating. I don't know how to do it. Nurg (talk) 02:03, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
Renames
editOur rename requests page is gone, so it's time to rethink how we handle rename requests. I tend to think that having a separate page is pointless, and that we should direct such requests straight to bureaucrats' user talk pages.
An interesting question, though, is what to do when a user with a global account requests a rename, which would sever the link to the global account. I'm inclined to redirect this type of request Meta, per the Meta:Global rename policy (technically not yet a policy). So users could add a request to Meta:Steward requests/Username changes.
Our policy, then, would be that we don't tinker with global accounts. --Peter Talk 07:00, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- I actually did have to sever a global account link when I was merging ShaunD in. Because his global account had a different username, and his WT-en account was an administrator, merging them in the usual manner would have removed his administrator access (something we're not currently allowed to do). I had to merge backwards (merge his WMF account name into his old WT-en account) and then rename back, requiring him to then re-link the accounts. Other than that rare occurrence, though, I support your proposal. LtPowers (talk) 13:32, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- m:Global rename policy is only a proposal (and discussion of making it policy seems to have been inactive for awhile). As stated on their rename request page, they will decline rename requests for wikis with bureaucrats, so we shouldn't be directing users there.
- I do think a separate requests page would be better; it's alot easier for users to put a request on a page than to find a bureaucrat and figure out who is active/willing to rename users (as I have been having trouble with on a few other wikis). Most large wikis on Wikimedia do have a rename request page as listed here. –sumone10154(talk) 22:16, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
- Regarding the global rename policy, it's true that it's a proposal, but it's not true that stewards will decline global rename requests, which is the issue here. Essentially we're saying that we will not muck about with global accounts—we don't have the ability to change them globally, and don't want to sever them locally. --Peter Talk 22:33, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Username change
edit- Swept in from the pub
I want to rename my username please. Will somebody let me know know how? --Saqib (talk) 15:28, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

- Did we ever resolve how we were going to handle rename requests? I'm not comfortable with renaming accounts that might break global accounts, and with the upcoming move to global Wikimedia accounts for all users the ability to rename an account will no longer be something that local bureaucrats can do anyhow. -- Ryan • (talk) • 18:00, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- Saqib isn't connected to a global account, so a local rename should be fine. What new username would you like, Saqib? --Peter Talk 18:12, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
Sakib. I'm postponing my username request Peter. --Saqib (talk) 18:48, 30 May 2013 (UTC)- Once the global account change that Ryan mentioned is activated, Saqib, we won't be able to do renames anymore, so get your request in soon if you change your mind. =) LtPowers (talk) 22:24, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- Saqib, it looks like you have accounts under the same name on different WMF projects. I would definitely recommend that you unify them before the global account change. --Peter Talk 22:59, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- Peter, those accounts under the same username are not owned by me unfortunately, and that's the reason I'm looking to change my current username so that I can have a global account, please change my username to Sakib. --Saqib (talk) 08:54, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
- Peter, I'm waiting for my rename request to be done. --Saqib (talk) 06:53, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
- I have sent you an email. If you have not received it, please let me know. --Peter Talk 03:34, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Ampersand banned?
editHi. There's no technical reason that ampersand should be banned. It will just be URL-encoded as "%26". It's no worse than "?", or any non-Latin/Arabic-numeral character. PiRSquared17 (talk) 18:22, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
- On WT we had trouble deleting and performing other admin actions on pages with ampersands in their titles. Is that no longer a concern here? LtPowers (talk) 15:08, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
