Lingbao is at the border of Henan, Shanxi, and Shaanxi provinces. It is the west gate of Henan Province, bordering the Qinling Mountains to the south and the Yellow River to the north. It has a permanent population of 736,000 in 2019. In ancient times, Lingbao was known as Taolin, also known as Taolin Fortress in the Zhou Dynasty. In 741 AD, which is the 29th year of the Tang Dynasty's Kaiyuan era, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty excavated the "Lingfu" at Hanguguan Pass and changed the year name to "Tianbao". He bestowed Taolin County as Lingbao County, symbolizing the meaning of "outstanding people, earth, and treasures".

Hangu Pass is located on the plateau to the west, Jue Jian to the east, Qinling Mountains to the south, and the Yellow River to the north. It is one of the earliest established fortresses in Chinese history. It is located in Wangduo Village, 15 km north of Lingbao City, and is close to the bank of the Yellow River. Due to being closed in the valley and as dangerous as a letter, it is called Hangu Pass. This used to be an ancient battlefield where war horses roared, and it was also an important gateway to the Jianmen Pass, where "one man is in charge, ten thousand men cannot open". This is also the place where ancient Chinese philosopher and philosopher Laozi wrote the 5000 character "Tao Te Ching".
