Sub-regions 2009 edit

Sub-regions aren't yet needed for Central Maryland, but I was thinking it might be nice to create just a Baltimore County subregion, since the county is so densely populated, and as it contains the inner suburbs produced by 1960s white flight from Baltimore, it has enough individual character to warrant its own article. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 00:24, 21 March 2009 (EDT)

Go for it. We've got too many cities in there, so I'd say now that it's needed. --(WT-en) Jonboy 13:56, 26 March 2009 (EDT)
I'd like to divide this up now, as the list is growing, and could potentially get much longer. I can't think of any sensible way to do it other than by county. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 12:44, 14 November 2011 (EST)

Article status edit

Per Project:Region guide status, the most important linked cities & other destinations must be at usable status in order for the region article to reach usable status itself. Annapolis and Baltimore are already there, but I'd say that Ellicott City and Towson should be as well. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 03:12, 1 June 2009 (EDT)

And now they are! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 00:56, 6 June 2009 (EDT)

Sub-regions 2017 edit

I think we should get rid of them entirely. What do you think? Hobbitschuster (talk) 15:25, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

I would first look at which articles in Baltimore County can be merged together, as most have only a few listing, then yes remove the sub-region. --Traveler100 (talk) 16:53, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Baltimore County aside, every single "sub-region" is just a redlink to a county! I think they're just holdouts from when WikiVoyage (or maybe it was WikiTravel at the time) cared much more about dividing things by county. If we do end up dividing Central Maryland into sub-regions, there's no guarantee we're going to divide it by county. And even if we do end up dividing the region by county: There's probably no point in having sub-region links until we actuality decide to divide Central Maryland into sub-regions.
Baltimore County is a different question. But for the rest, I'm going to plunge forward and remove the sub-region redlinks. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 06:44, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
And here's my solution to Baltimore County. Does this look good to everyone? Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 06:53, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Somehow, I missed the first section on this talk page (the one where it was decided to split things up by county). Regardless, those county sub-regions were never created, and until they are: There's no point in having those red-links.
Anyway: I had a thought for the Baltimore County guide. Maybe it's scope should be changed, so that it covers the suburbs of Baltimore rather then the county itself. The county includes a large rural area, I don't think that really fits in with "the densely populated suburbs of Baltimore". Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 00:35, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I've looked over the city articles in Baltimore County, and I think Traveler100's right. I'm thinking most (or at least, a lot) of the city articles should be merged. And I think the best place to merge most of them would be the districts of Baltimore (most of the city articles cover places just outside Baltimore city limits). Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 01:33, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I redirected Hunt Valley to Cockeysville. The Hunt Valley article didn't have any content, and from looking at an aerial map, it's clear that Hunt Valley and Cockeysville are not two different cities. So, one down. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 04:24, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I've tagged some of the guides with few or no listings for merging into the districts of Baltimore . Those articles are: Woodlawn (Maryland) (technically, someone else tagged that), Dundalk (Maryland), Arbutus, Essex (Maryland).
User:Hobbitschuster User:Traveler100, does this look good to everyone. And I've already left a note about this conversation on the Baltimore talk page. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 06:43, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Is going in the right direction. Baltimore County is still a group of almost empty articles. One suggestion is, as you have pointed out, is merge those places close to Baltimore districts into those articles, place further out maybe merge into Baltimore County, making it a city article instead of a region. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:55, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Make Baltimore County a city article. That's an idea. But a few city guides (such as Pikesville) aren't actuality empty. How do we handle those? Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 07:23, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'll go ahead and merge those articles. I was holding off on that, I wanted to give the editors of the Baltimore article time to raise concerns or objections. But now that I've thought about it some more, merging really isn't as big of a change to the Baltimore articles as I thought it'd be. Actuality, I don't think it's a big change at all. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 21:44, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
With those city-guides merged, we now have 7 guides left in Baltimore County (not counting redlinks): Cockeysville with only two listings and no meaningful content in the article-body, Owings Mills with only two listings but a fair amount of actual content in the body, Pikesville and Towson which are actuality a proper guides, Sparks Glencoe with four listings and no meaningful content in the body, Timonium and White Marsh with only one listing but some content in the body. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 00:31, 20 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I've reorganised the Baltimore County guide so that it lists the cities\neighborhoods by their direction from Baltimore, and links to the Baltmore district-guides (which now cover areas outside city limits). Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 01:38, 20 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
My only comment is to maybe slow down just a bit, if you really want feedback from other editors. Baltimore and its related pages probably don't get many editors looking at them frequently. The ones that do might not edit every day.
But otherwise, by all means, plunge forward. I've talked about doing a somewhat similar reorganization of Atlanta for years, but have never gotten around to it (mostly because I don't know how to make replacement maps). You might look at the Talk pages there for some inspiration. Beyond that, what you're suggesting seems reasonable. --Bigpeteb (talk) 17:26, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I had the same thought about slowing down. Anyway: I'm thinking about changing the scope of the Baltimore County guide, and having it cover the whole Baltimore metropoliten area. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 16:30, 16 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
