Talk:Clipperton Island
A "stupid" place to visit?
editThere has been language reverted from this article of the form "There is nothing on the island so 'travel' there would be stupid!". See Project:Tone, Project:Be fair and Project:Don't tout (specifically: give the traveller the information they need to decide on their own) for an understanding of why this language is being reverted - to briefly summarize, it's not the job of a travel guide to tell someone what they're going to think about a place, it's the job of a travel guide to provide an accurate description of a place so a traveler can decided if they want to visit, and will then have the information they need about that place if they do visit. It's fine to describe this island as remote, difficult to reach, and offering minimal services, but it's not OK to say that a visit there is a stupid idea - let the traveler make up his or her own mind. -- (WT-en) Ryan 21:25, 17 September 2006 (EDT)
- Sorry, but I have to say after reading about it that Clipperton Island sounds like an awesome place to visit. --(WT-en) Evan 21:50, 17 September 2006 (EDT)
- I'd be too scared shitless.--86.176.250.140 21:20, 27 December 2010 (EST)
Water
editThere`s no reason for stating that the water in the lagoon is fundamentally undrinkable. Obviously it is stagnant with a high degree of organic matter in it but the only times that it would be completely undrinkable is when the monsoon temporarily breaks up the halocine gradient and causes the surface water to become brackish. At all other times the water could be made potable by filtering with beach sand and cloth and solar sterilising the strained water in a normal clear PET plastic water bottle. It would obviously be preferable to bring one`s own supply owing to the inherent dangers of drinking bad-quality water.
The following bulletin quotes visitors who stated that the water was drinkable:- http://www.sil.si.edu/digitalcollections/atollresearchbulletin/issues/00094.pdf —The preceding comment was added by 221.113.209.78 (talk • contribs) 12:16, 1 January 2010
Get in
editWhile trying to fix the dead link in the get in section, I came across this webpage (polynesie-francaise.pref.gouv.fr) which talks about entry requirements for the island, but my level of French doesn't extend this far so that I can understand it. The most important bit of the page, I think from what I can understand, is this: "Si tout individu ... désireux de se rendre sur l'île de Clipperton, hors activité mentionnée ci-dessus (recherches, pêche professionnelle ou pêche sportive), peut au préalable demander une autorisation pour occupation du domaine public de l'Etat ..., le Haut-Commissaire de la République en Polynésie française, ne délivre des autorisations de débarquement qu'aux seules expéditions scientifiques conduites par des chercheurs reconnus." I believe this is saying that unless you are going there for fishing or scientific research, you can get authorisation from some organisation of the state. Could someone with a better knowledge of French than me possibly check this page to see what it says, and whether our information on getting there is correct. Thanks. Where does this belong?
editThere is no way to navigate to this article since it is under Central_America but not listed there. It isn't exactly a major destination (no inhabitants and no scheduled connections). Should this at least go under French_Polynesia where is used to be administrated from? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 23:20, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- I'd say FP as what you say. It seems the most logical solution. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 04:09, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
