Talk:Discovery Islands

Suggestion: move Discovery Islands to their own category, rather than clumping them into this one edit

Cortes, Quadra, Sonora, Thurlow, and Maurelle Island are part of the Discovery Islands. According to wikipedia: "

The major Northern Gulf Islands are as follows:
Comox Valley Regional District
Denman Island
Hornby Island
Powell River Regional District
Lasqueti Island
Texada Island
Quadra Island is sometimes said to be part of the Gulf Islands.[1] It is more often designated as part of the Discovery Islands.

"

While the Discovery Islands (as listed on wikipedia) are as follows:

Strathcona Regional District
Hardwicke Island (north: Poyntz, Seymour, Murray; west: Yorke; south: Helmcken)
West Thurlow Island
East Thurlow Island (west: Walkem Islands; south: Tum)
Sonora Island (northwest: Hardinge, Block)
Stuart Island
Quadra Island (north: Okis Islands}
Maurelle Island
Read Island (east: Hill Island, Penn Islands)
Rendezvous Islands
Raza Island
West Redonda Island (south: Mink, Kinghorn, and the Martin Islands; north: Elizabeth)
East Redonda Island (south: Melville, Morgan, Eveleigh, Otter, and the William Islands; north: Double, Channel)
Marina Island
Cortes Island (west: Subtle Islands)
Twin Islands
Powell River Regional District
Hernando Island (east: Copeland Islands)
Savary Island

I would recommend moving them to a new category, since that’s what the locals call them, and Wikipedia seems to agree. Omphalosskeptic (talk) 23:55, 3 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I agree, and moved the Northern Gulf Islands page to Discovery Islands. I also moved Denman and Hornby Island (previously listed on this page) to Central Vancouver Island as that is the most appropriate region to include them in. Savary Island, although sometimes considered part of the Discovery Islands, I've left in Sunshine Coast (British Columbia) rather than include here because that is where it is usually accessed from. -Shaundd (talk) 16:19, 25 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Once there is enough information, i.e. a substantial number of listings, then make this a region but until then cover all the islands on this page. --Traveler100 (talk) 03:04, 29 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
I don't agree. This page is already a region and has been described as one since it was created almost ten years ago. Regions don't typically have listings so I'm starting the process of adding listings to the relevant destination guides. As I mentioned in my post below, I considered grouping it with one of the Vancouver Island regions, but after reading a bit about it, I got the impression this area is sufficiently different from Vancouver Island that it warrants it's own region. A relatively small number of destinations in a region is uncommon but not unheard of in WV -- Gaspé Peninsula, South Tyrol and Southern Chile all have subregions with a very small number of destinations. -Shaundd (talk) 05:52, 30 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Outer Islands edit

I think for now we should cover all of the islands that aren't Quadra & Cortes in one larger "Outer Islands" guide. For reference, these were the other islands I removed form the main page:

Rationale for "Region" edit

In response to this edit suggesting (1) the Quadra Island content I've just started working on be merged into this page, and (2) that the Discovery Islands don't have enough content to be their own region, I want to set out my rationale for keeping it as a separate region.

  1. I do think there are three articles here. Quadra Island and Cortes Island, based on the research I've done, both meet the definition of what is an article. It's harder to tell with the outer islands, although I think there are one or two lodges plus some some remote campgrounds. Cortes Island and the Outer Islands are unlikely to ever be huge articles, but the area is remote and covers a large land area, which leads to my second point...
  2. These islands aren't the same as Central Vancouver Island, which is where they'd otherwise be grouped with. Central Vancouver Island is fairly populated (by BC standards) region with a fair bit of infrastructure (tourist, industry, commerce) and a number of holiday destinations. The Discovery Islands, by contrast, are largely unpopulated and undeveloped. The region is also intended to cover remote parts of the mainland that are only accessible from the islands or by float plane (i.e., the Outer Islands and Mainland Inlets article).

I understand the point of view that there isn't much there and it could all be covered in one article. It was my position before I started researching it. However, after looking into it, I thought otherwise and I'd appreciate this structure being left as is. Thanks. -Shaundd (talk) 07:48, 29 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Looking at the article as it is now, it is easy to get the impression of this being a region not being justified. But if after some research you draw the opposite conclusion, I believe you are justified and won't propose a merger or similar things. Hobbitschuster (talk) 11:52, 29 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Situation has now changed due to some good work being done. Agree there is no need for the merge request. --Traveler100 (talk) 13:30, 20 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Return to "Discovery Islands" page.
