Hotel safety

Uganda has old but straightforward legislation on safety and health. The origin of this legislation is the British law when Uganda was a British Protectorate. All the British laws were adopted with minor modifications in 1964 just after independence in 1962.

Recent efforts have been made to bring the legislation into conformity with the current phenomena and concerns. Subsidiary legislation includes The Gas Rules, The Fire Rules, The Electricity Special Rules, etc.

I am therefore rather puzzled as to exactly why this edit removed a warning about a particular Entebbe hotel without providing a rationale?

Lawrence Adima, the Chief Fire Officer of Uganda has called for the urgent drafting of a comprehensive Fire Safety Law. He has explained that one fire safety law would simplify, rationalize and consolidate existing fire safety legislation. One law would not only ensure stricter compliance, but would also hold property owners liable in case of avoidable accidents.

Fire safety regulations in Kampala require that property developers present their building plans to the fire brigade before and after construction to ensure that it is guaranteed against obvious risk from fire accidents. I am still researching the position here in Entebbe.

Maria Emily Lubega Mutagamba is the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities in the Ugandan cabinet. She was appointed to that position in the cabinet reshuffle of 15 August 2012. Previously, from 2006 to 2012, she held the portfolio of water and environment. Hijacking memorial?

The only thing many people know about Entebbe is the infamous hijacking about four decades ago. Is there some kind of memorial of it at the airport, maybe? As for now we have just two sights in the article, so this could be an interesting addition. ϒpsilon (talk) 18:05, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Mmmm, I don't want to blow my cover here, so let me just confine myself to saying this:

The new, public terminal facilities (at 0.04501N, 32.44296E) are 1230m almost due west of the old "hijack terminal" (at 0.04547N, 32.45387E) in an area restricted to aircrew and airport staff. Bullet marks are still visible in the brickwork of the old terminal's frontage but I have never seen a memorial there. When I fly out in a couple of weeks, I'll take another look and double check. Peering through the bars of State House is a "See" but the interesting stuff is serendipitous to come across. A huge pig trussed like a turkey and upside down riding as the second passenger on a bodo-bodo that is frightened by a loose cow, struggles free, causes the motorcycle to crash into a herd of goats which then bring traffic chaos causing a military truck to bring down a power pole - not the sort of things you can do listings for... Oh great, now I am going to have to kill you too. In any case there doesn't seem to be much, a plaque at the old terminal in 2005 [1] (IsraelNN.com) Uganda has dedicated a memorial to Yoni Netanyahu, the IDF officer who died while leading an elite unit of officers to rescue Israelis kidnapped at the Entebbe airport. The slain commander's brother, Finance Minister Binyamin (Bibi) Netanyahu, spoke at the dedication ceremony. A plaque on the wall of the old terminal, where the hostages were taken before being rescued, stated, "The government of Israel decided to call the operation 'Operation Yonatan" in memory of the brave commander who lost his life. The rescue operation at Entebbe will always serve as an example in the world-wide war against terror." and a ceremony in 2012 per w:Operation Entebbe#Commemorations. That first news item was more than 9 years old so maybe someone has nicked it since. New Vision is one of the more reputable local papers, so that's more puzzling - maybe they held the ceremony and pinned a plaque at the North side of the tower, more in the shade? You've piqued my curiosity now so I will make further enquiries. Guide?

I think this article is almost at Guide status (= an African OtBP next winter?). Stay safe and Go next are empty, some listings lack coordinates and there's perhaps something to see in the town that isn't mentioned in the See section yet. ϒpsilon (talk) 09:38, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

So, I've now fixed everything I mentioned and will upgrade it the article to guide. In case someone wonders, there really don't seem to be very many attractions here; for example Tripadvisor recommended the same as we do, a reptile park which in reality is up in Kampala and a bunch of tour companies... Placement of images

Current banner

Proposed replacement

Before being featured shortly for OtBP I'd like to propose a possible banner replacement. I find that the current banner doesn't really entice me to want to visit Entebbe, and the two top listings under 'See' are wildlife and nature. Thoughts, anyone? –StellarD (talk) 09:22, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
