New banner

Proposed banner

There is an Australia commons photo competition going on. Good chance to update some banners. How about this for Fraser Island?

I much prefer the current banner.

The current banner has photographic merit, but I am finding that too many Australia articles have almost generic beach scenes such as this. I was hoping to add some variety... --Andrewssi2 (talk) 02:45, 1 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
I understand. However, people aren't visiting this place to see a dingo in a blurry background, I don't think, so variety for its own sake may not be the right way to go in regard to pagebanners. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:55, 1 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Late response, but I visited Fraser Island this April and the current one is definitely more representative of the island. After all, Fraser Is. is known for being the world's largest sand island, so it'd be absurd to add a photo of a dingo that could be almost anywhere that's not Tas. Rename to K'gari

edit

Although both names are still widely used, I think the time has come to update the name to K'gari. In June 2023, the Queensland government officially dropped the dual naming in favour of using K'gari only, and this has widely caught on. There are very few people who refuse to use K'gari (usually within 4WD circles), but this is a vocal minority.

Other instances of K'gari being favoured over Fraser Island:

Then there are these that use both names interchangeably:

  • Fraser Coast uses both interchangeably, with K'gari being favoured that the start but then inconsistency arises afterwards.
  • Highway signs (they often do not mention either name at all but direct you to River Heads)
  • Apple Maps (uses a mix of both very inconsistently)
  • Sealink (though it favors K'gari)

The few that exclusively use Fraser Island:

  • Fraser Dingo 4WD Hire
  • 4WD circles. (this Reddit thread also gives a good read, but shouldn't be taken into account for this specific discussion)
  • Wikipedia (last discussion ended in no consensus).

By the looks of it, the name K'gari over Fraser Island has caught on far more than using dual naming or Fraser Island alone, especially after the Queensland government's decision to drop the dual naming and use K'gari only. It's only about time that Wikivoyage also joins in with the rest of society by renaming this to K'gari. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 02:47, 10 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

I also just found this. Even SKY NEWS (a la Murdoch media) is using K'gari! I think the case for keeping the old name is no more. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:08, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Since there have been no objections, I will complete the move now. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 10:31, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Support: For what it's worth, I support the decision to rename to K'gari as well. The decision is well justified by the sources provided, short of a few commercial sources. Cyali (talk) 02:12, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
