Talk:Kinross
Lead & Understand
editThe lead to this page was slightly expanded as part of an expedition to improve lead paras. The new intro seemed also to cover "Understand" so I dropped that section, but AlasdairW, you re-instated it. Such a section is optional, but if there's to be one, please let it contain something worth understanding - more interesting background, eg how come MQOS ended up there? What about the loch ecology, what about the gliders? (And perhaps Falkland Palace would fit better on this page?) The expedition will shortly offer draft revised style guidance on what these two sections should contain so please chip into that discussion. I reckoned 38 Scottish pages had poor lead paras, which I intend to blitz in the next few days. Regards Grahamsands (talk) 08:12, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
- Where does it say the Understand section is optional? 'Understand' is necessary for a town article to be anything greater than usable. If you're going to propose a policy change, the time and place to do that is before an expedition is mounted, in a more-frequented part of the site. Improving lead paragraphs is great, but doing it at the expense of another section is counter-productive.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 08:30, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
- Understand is a necessary section, and must be kept even it it ends up being empty. The new intro didn't cover what is in Understand. There is no mention of Milnathort, and it doesn't have the visitor info link. However the new intro is a good introduction and a welcome addition. AlasdairW (talk) 19:15, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
- This "Understand" has now expanded - it's far from a shining example but it illustrates an approach that will sometimes be helpful. What does the visitor need to understand about Kinross? Obviously the loch, the castle and MQOS, plus that weird big structure just west. However it seemed more natural to put this background into the POIs than all in a slab at the outset. So the lead is basically a teaser, and the residual “Understand” is brief and might even fold into the lead. The TIC is refd there, though it’s a feeble effort citing attractions as far away as Glasgow, they can’t have read Wikivoyage. (Serious point: One success criterion for WV is that we see our own stuff cited in tourist material, and there could be a project to promote awareness to those agencies.) Kinross itself gets its population cited, and I am not hearing it said that such figures are wanted for every itsy-bitsy place that might be name-checked within the page scope, let alone those like Milnathort that have scant reason for mention. Milnathort golf course is listed in “Do” but there are oodles of others. Grahamsands (talk) 10:12, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
