Restaurants etc should be placed under the appropriate town pages when created. (WT-en) Jpatokal 22:20, 9 Dec 2004 (EST)

Regions

edit

I think that the Maui article could be divided into several regions, with just the main points of entry and highlights in the Maui article. There is probably enough information here to do that already. -- (WT-en) Huttite 20:25, 15 Jan 2006 (EST)

Accommodations

edit

I removed a link someone had posted to their VRBO vacation rental listing. Wikipedia is NOT for advertisting, you bastards.

You appear to be lost -- this is Wikivoyage, not Wikipedia -- (WT-en) Colin 14:16, 31 August 2006 (EDT)

I think that the Maui article should provide some help for travelers all of whom need accommodations. So I tried to add that section but someone deleted it. I am going to reinstate it now.

Feel free to add specific hotels and other similar accommodations. We do not link to other guides -- because as a guide we ought not need to. -- (WT-en) Colin 15:40, 10 August 2006 (EDT)

That makes sense. But how can someone book a flight or accommodation using our "guide"? -- [traveler7277]

Sorry that I didn't make a note at the time -- it would help if you'd take a look at Project:Goals and non-goals as well as Project:External links and Project:Manual of style. We have a pretty standard way of laying out the guides (ie the heading names and what goes in each section) I think you added a new "sleep" section instead of adding to the exisiting one. Let me know if you have any questions. (WT-en) Maj 16:04, 10 August 2006 (EDT)
When listing a particular hotel, you can link to the hotel's own website (see Project:Accommodation listings), and phone numbers for the hotel. If the hotel wishes to accept online reservations, it can explain this to the traveller from its own website. Otherwise, you call them. -- (WT-en) Colin 20:38, 10 August 2006 (EDT)

I'm moving this here for data mining. Content should go in the appropriate section of the guide (ie Get in and Sleep). Thanks (WT-en) Maj 16:05, 10 August 2006 (EDT)

Thank you Maj for directing me to the Goals and non-goals. I am new to this process and I appreciate your kindness. I am still a little confused - are you suggesting that we move the content about finding flights and accommodations online to a different section? By the way, how can I have my name signed automatically (like you did) Thanks [Traveller 7277]
I have looked at Goals etc and found the item "For on-line use by travellers still planning to review destinations, plan itineraries, make reservations, and get excited about their trip;" particularly interesting. Don't you think that helping people with their online searches for Maui (and Hawaii generally also) would suit that goal? I would like to reinstate but I do not want to be rude - what do you recommend? (WT-en) Traveler7277 16:28, 10 August 2006 (EDT)
Review Project:External links. As far as goals go, we want to write a travel guide, not a guide that tells the traveller which other guides are good. So feel free to write about where to go, what to do, and where to stay directly here at wikivoyage. We are uninterested in linking to other guides not because the other guides suck, but because the job of deciding which other guides are good or bad is just a job we don't have an interest in accomplishing. -- (WT-en) Colin 20:38, 10 August 2006 (EDT)

Getting There and Staying There

edit

Flights

edit

There are many airlines flying from the continental US to Maui, including: American, United, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Hawaiian and Aloha. Most of the Asian airlines also fly from Japan, China, Malaysia, and Singapore. Discounts are best found for travel in the fall. There are three ariports: Kahului, Hana, and Kapalua West Maui Airport. Most travelers will use Kahului (OGG) when coming in from the mainland.

Finding Accommodations

edit

The majority of travelers to Maui stay in one of two areas: West Maui, which encompasses the coast covering Lahaina to Kapalua or South Maui, which includes the Kihei, Wailea and Makena areas. Beginning your search online is the best way to find the hotel or condo that will meet your needs. Most online travel agencies provide information on their site but it is always recommended to call the agency directly and speak with their most knowledgeable agents. The largest agencies include Expedia [1], Great Hawaii Vacations,800-688-2254 [ [2], Pleasant Holidays,[3], and Travelocity, [4]. Smaller agencies tend to have a more difficult time getting volume pricing deals.

Accommodation listings

edit

I removed the sleep listings and moved them to the towns as the region article is not supposed to have a Sleep section. One that does not have a town is:

  • Napili Bay:
    • Outrigger Napili Shores, [5]. Condominiums adjacent to Napili Bay Beach.

Move to city

edit

Hi, everyone. As is quite common in articles about islands, there are a bunch of specific listings. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this shouldn't be the case, unless we want to merge all the content of articles about towns in Maui into the main article. That not being the case, the "Do" section should be a prose overview without bullets, and the specific listings of dive clubs, canoeing and kayaking clubs, etc. should all be moved to the relevant city article - or if already there, simply deleted from this article. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:17, 7 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

We're running into a similar issue with many of the other Hawaiian island articles, since the towns are often tiny, with the resorts and other sights located far away from the towns. At Talk:Nosy Be, LtPowers suggested using the city article template to write about an area that would normally be considered a region (see Rural Montgomery County), although there are some difficulties with that approach in cases where you have a town or city within the larger region that might warrant its own article. I don't have a good suggestion for dealing with these sorts of cases, and aside from making sure that listings aren't duplicated would suggest that those interested in editing the articles should proceed as they see best, and if a good solution comes out of those efforts we can try to generalize it for use elsewhere on the site. -- Ryan • (talk) • 17:30, 7 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
I can't speak to the other islands, but from what I recall of Maui when I visited there, the main population centers and attractions overlap a fair bit so the Maui article itself shouldn't need listings. A lot of those listings in the Do section should be in Kihei, Lahaina, Wailea or Haleakala National Park. It's possible the eastern/southern/uplands part of the island could be treated as a "rural" type article (covering the Lavender Farm, the pineapple winery and the Pi'ilani Hwy) but treating the whole island that way would be unwieldy (IMO). -Shaundd (talk) 06:09, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Maui Wildfires

edit

I have added a warning box due to the unfortunate situation with the Maui wildfires, and am wondering if a caution box on the Hawaii article is needed or not, stating that travel to Maui is currently discouraged. JRHorse (talk) 03:11, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
