Golf equipment
editI put in a section on this, which HKPatv removed saying "I guess these are fake clubs". The golfers I know are happy with them, so I'm inclined to put it back in. Anyone else got comments? (WT-en) Pashley 23:30, 20 April 2006 (EDT)
- I was basing the removal on this: Project:illegal activities policy - I remember seeing similar discussions on prostitution. I think no problem to mention that a certain area is (in)famous for selling fake golf equipment - in part to someone who may think they are genuine (unlikely I know), but that is different to what I saw before which was almost recommendation to buy fake gear from a certain shop/area. A bit like the difference between suggesting you go to a certain brothel to get laid compared to a warning that a certain area is a red light district. The former is a recommendation to perform illegal activity - the second will inform readers and allow to make their own decision.(WT-en) Hkpatv 23:42, 21 April 2006 (EDT)
I put it back with a warning to watch out for fakes. Certainly the golfers I know think they are getting good value; one has taken several sets home for friends. (WT-en) Pashley 05:36, 22 April 2006 (EDT)
- Sorry, I'm going to take it out again - at the moment it reads like a recommendation to buy fake clubs with a email contact for someone to buy them from. The point is not regarding whether or not they are good value - I am sure they are - the point is that buying fake equipment is illegal in China - please check the illegal activies policy.
- I've read the policy and don't think it is relevant. I'm not suggesting buying bogus golf clubs; I'm suggesting buying golf clubs where they are cheap. This is China, so anything might be fake. Other than that, the only reason I have to suppose that clubs here might be fake is you asserting it. Why should I believe that when golfers I know happily buy them? I will ask the golfers when I see them, though.
- I have been to the shopping malls in Zhu Hai and Lo Wu and I know what the score is with the cheap golf clubs. If they are selling a complete set of brand name clubs for around HK$1000, they are fake. In the unlikely event that they are not fake then they are stolen from the factory. I don't want to get into the relative advantages/disadvantages of fake clubs or whether your frients are happy with them, that is not the point. Same as the DVD's at GongBei - if you can buy them for HK$10 then they are fake, even if they are not labelled. No problem to mention in passing that the shopping malls are full of fake gear, but not OK to suggest people go there to buy fake gear.
- OK Leave it out, at least until I can check with the golfers here (WT-en) Pashley 07:07, 23 April 2006 (EDT)
OK I've asked a local golfer and he says his clubs are bogus and low quality. (WT-en) Pashley 05:48, 14 June 2006 (EDT)
Ferry to Islands
editHow do you get to the outlying islands?(WT-en) Hkpatv 08:20, 1 May 2006 (EDT)
- From the Xiangzhou Northern Wharf (香洲北堤码头), you can get to the Wanshan Islands (万山群岛).
Great work!
editThis and Guangzhou are steadily creeping up to guide status. My pedantic heart is especially warmed by lots of hanzi and careful pinyin transcriptions too (tone marks, oh my!). A little more effort, and we'll have our first mainland Chinese Destination of the Month! (WT-en) Jpatokal 13:11, 9 July 2006 (EDT)
Great to hear. Checking the history, I find it was August 22 last year that I created it as a three-line page. There've been a whole lot of contributors since. Can we make giude by August 22 this year? (WT-en) Pashley 02:49, 18 July 2006 (EDT)
- Are we there yet? (WT-en) Pashley 22:32, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
Train?
editWhen I left Zhuhai a couple of years back, construction of a Zhuhai-Guangzhou high-speed rail line was well underway. I was supposed to be in service in 2008. What's the current status? Should the "get in" section add a "By train" subsection? (WT-en) Pashley 19:07, 26 May 2008 (EDT)
It's not there yet - the only news I could find about it is here - http://www.macaudailytimesnews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=11029&Itemid=29 - which says it will open in 2008. Adding details. (WT-en) Sachabrunel 22:57, 26 May 2008 (EDT)
It's still not there and doesn't appear to be anywhere close to finished. (WT-en) gboone42
Okay to remove many of the bar references/directions?
editThere are several sections in both drinks/places (describing the districts and such) that read a bit too much like bar/prostitution guides. As this isn't a sex tourism guide, I'd like to rewrite the sections to omit the information on the brothels (or at least the directions for finding them), and rewrite the location sections more as warnings (Caution: Use your best judgement) than as invitations.
HKG Ferry Service
editThe information on the table is out of date, I don't know enough about changing tables in wiki to do it confidently, but there are more than two ferries running between HKIA and Zhuhai, an updated timetable is online here: http://www.cksp.com.hk/eng/skypier/timetable/main.html (WT-en) gboone42 10:20, 1 Dec. 2008 (China Time)
- I've removed the table. Please add in links for any other companies that you know of. (WT-en) Jpatokal 00:30, 1 December 2008 (EST)
Photos and titles
editThere are now a huge number of photos, some brilliant. However, I think there are too many. Things like photos of the street food vendors are great illustrations of what to expect in Zhuhai. However, things like photo of the airport (inside and outside!) or bus stations strike me as a waste of space. I'm inclined to remove about half the photos here, keep only the best ones. I'd say the only transport photo worth keeping is the ferry boat; great shot.
We currently have at least seven pictures of Lotus Road. I'd say we need, at the absolute most, three — shopping, bars by day & bars by night. Maybe only one or two. The great thing about having so many now is that it gives us choices. Similarly, we now have at least three for Bar Street. Cut it to one; that's all we need to illustrate the atmosphere. I'd say the one captioned "Outdoor seating"; I love it.
I think with some culling, we'd have really excellent illustrations, but I feel fairly strongly that we need to cull. Other opinions?
On a related note, a caption "Lover's Road, Gongbei with Jida in the distance" was changed to "Zhuhai has a long beautiful coastline, and 146 islands". Why? Granted, the photo shows some coastline, but what it shows is Lover's Road, and it does illustrate how the districts of Jida and Gongbei are separated. However, it has nothing to do with islands. I'd say the original caption was far better. Other captions could also be improved. (WT-en) Pashley 23:12, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
- I've saved the links for all the existing photos at User talk:(WT-en) Pashley/Sandbox.Zhuhai to cover us in case of blunders or disagreement in culling. (WT-en) Pashley 00:22, 12 March 2009 (EDT)
- Sounds like a positive change to me. Also, I think the one titled "View approaching JiuZhou Port, Zhuhai" can be yanked too, since it's almost the same as the background of the ferry shot. (WT-en) Texugo 00:45, 12 March 2009 (EDT)
- I think most of the current pictures are quite OK. However, the article formatting is all of the place, and needs to be MoSed quite a bit. (WT-en) Jpatokal 02:50, 16 March 2009 (EDT)
Districts?
editIs this article getting big enough that we want to split it into several district articles? Zhuhai breaks quite naturally into districts; the terrain is bays and headlands, clumps of development separated by hills. It would probably be one of the easier cities to districtify.
I'd say not yet, but it seems worth asking for other opinions. The policy is at Project:Geographical_hierarchy#Districts_in_cities. (WT-en) Pashley 02:51, 12 March 2009 (EDT)
Map?
editThis is a really nicely illustrated article, and on a cursory inspection, as someone who's never been to Zhuhai, it looks like a good potential front-page feature (DotM, I'd think, as it is really not off the beaten path). The only obvious thing that seems to be lacking is a map. But I'd love to hear opinions of people who actually know Zhuhai. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:42, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
- I think the text also needs a copy edit, not a great deal but some. Parts of it appear to have been written by a Chinese with less-than-optimal English and it needs an overall polish. I cannot volunteer now; I'm busy with other things.
- It also lacks a custom banner.
- Zhuhai is famous for prostitution and we mention that, so the question of whether this violates Wikivoyage:Sex tourism policy might be looked at. I do not think there is a problem in the current text, and would argue strongly against bowdlerisation. Pashley (talk) 12:41, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
- My feeling is that it doesn't violate the policy, as no specific brothels are recommended, nor (correct me if I'm misremembering) is there advice about how to hire a prostitute. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:40, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
- I think that is fine as is, though I'd replace "working girls" with "streetwalkers" in the description of Lianhua Lu. I do not think the euphemism is necessary or that all readers will understand it.
- There are also footnote-style links which should be cleaned up and I think most of the Districts section should have its order reversed, South-to-North instead of N-to-S so that the main tourist areas are at the top of the list rather than going from suburbs to center. Probably there is other cleanup need too; these are just what I notice when quickly re-reading it. Pashley (talk) 16:25, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Learn
editI'm putting the contents of the Learn section below for now. Learn is supposed to give info on short courses or other learning opportunities that a traveller could do in the short term without setting up residence. If any of these do offer such opportunities, please add details on that before putting it back in the article. Alternately, if any of these are recommendable places to See or Do something, they can be placed in the respective section, with an explanation. Texugo (talk) 22:19, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
Two universities are located along the main coastal road North of central Zhuhai, between Xiangzhou and Tangjia, accessible by bus 3, 10, 69 or the sightseeing bus:
- Zhongshan University (中山大学; Zhōngshān Dàxué; also known as Sun Yat-Sen Dàxué).
- Harbin Institute of Technology (Technological Innovation Beach).
Several more are further North, on a side road just before Jinding. Take bus 69 from town, bus 70 from Jinding, or bus 10A from Gongbei. The Zhuhai North train station is also in this area.
- Beijing Normal University (北京师范大学 (北师大); Běijīng Shīfàn Dàxué (Běishīdà)).
- Beijing Institute of Technology.
- United International College (On the BNU campus). A liberal arts university co-funded by Hong Kong Baptist University and Beijing Normal University. Classes are taught entirely in English.
Several other universities are further West, in Doumen District.
