Template talk:Shortcut
Swept from the pub:
I've created a shortcut template without informing the community thus without a consensus and already added to all the WV namespace pages where required such as Wikivoyage:Wiki or Wikivoyage:Welcome, newcomers. The template adds a right-aligned box on top of the page to the rendered page, and display the shortcuts available to the page you're on. I thought creating such a shortcut template is good for the shortcut mechanism. and one can easily remember the available shortcuts of a particular page. If anyone oppose or have any comment, please post below. --Saqib (talk) 06:06, 8 October 2012 (CEST)
- I don't think I can ever memorize these shortcuts. And when I am already viewing the page, I can easily copy-paste the page title instead of thinking about the shortcut. I don't really oppose your template, but I neither see how to use it. Atsirlin (talk) 16:13, 8 October 2012 (CEST)
- You don't need to use this template but incase if you want to, add
{{shortcut|shortcut link}}
to a page and its done. The template will generate a box only that will display available shortcuts to that particular page. That shortcut box can be found very useful. --Saqib (talk) 16:29, 8 October 2012 (CEST)- I've found them useful on other sites. JamesA >talk 08:03, 9 October 2012 (CEST)
- We have few enough policies that our shortcuts are usually obvious. Does it really help you to know you can get to Wikivoyage:Geographical hierarchy by typing "Geographical hierarchy"? LtPowers (talk) 14:31, 11 October 2012 (CEST)
- That link's not useful at all. I think adding 7+2 to the template could be useful, though. Or creating new redirects, such as GH. JamesA >talk 14:39, 11 October 2012 (CEST)
- I think the shortcut boxes are a good idea. For a new user or someone just getting into patrolling or policy discussions, I think the box on the page is an easy (and more obvious) way to learn the shortcuts. "Geographical hierarchy" is a bad one, but xl, dt, tour and apt are all very helpful. -Shaund (talk) 20:50, 11 October 2012 (CEST)
- They are already listed at Wikivoyage:Shortcuts (and its own obvious shortcut, Shortcuts) and at Wikivoyage:Directory of policies and guidelines, which I think anyone getting in to such discussions will already have found. I definitely don't see listing the shortcuts as being so important that it needs a prominent box at the top of every article; maybe something less visually distracting down at the bottom or in the sidebar. Outside of length-limited edit summary messages it's usually easier to read by using the full page name, and that's already easy to copy and paste when you're looking at the page in question. -- D. - So is the issue the positioning of the shortcuts on the page? For the record, I don't mind them and would actually like to create a few more shortcuts (I'll look over the "shortcuts" page later). (WV-en) Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:25, 14 October 2012 (CEST)
- I'm not fussed about its location on the page, although I personally don't find the boxes distracting where they are now. I think some of this comes down to different people using the site and pulling information in different ways. I don't think it hurts to have multiple ways of providing the shortcuts. -Shaund (talk) 23:58, 14 October 2012 (CEST)

As a general rule, I think it's a good idea to provide easily memorable shortcuts to most of our policies and policy sections. -- Alice✉ 22:09, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
