Welcome

edit

Hello Johnycanal!

Welcome to Wikivoyage. Please take a sec to look at our copyleft and policies and guidelines, but feel free to plunge forward and edit some pages. Scanning the Manual of style, especially the article templates, can give you a good idea of how we like articles formatted. If you need help, check out Project:Help, and if you need some info not on there, post a message in the travellers' pub.

Thank you for contributing to Whistler, Vancouver/Kitsilano, Bali, and adding Rai Leh.

A couple of tips.

  1. The Table of Contents automatically displays after 3 headings are added to a page. If you use the quick versions of the article templates, standard headings are added and a table of contents appears.
  2. Please give website URL's in listings for accommodation, restaurants, and bars as one of our goals is to have a printed guide and hidden URL's are useless in print. -- (WT-en) Huttite 05:02, 17 Feb 2005 (EST)

Nice job!

Thanks for the work on the rock-climbing destinations, especially City of Rocks National Reserve. Looks good so far! -- (WT-en) Ryan 12:28, 5 June 2006 (EDT)

And a thanks from me too, keep adding to Thailand and Indonesia! (WT-en) Jpatokal 04:19, 4 July 2006 (EDT)

Images

edit

Johnycanal,

Instead of uploading images on this site could you upload them to the Shared_site? This makes it easier for us to maintain the images and the site. You will need to create a_Shared_user_name, but that is the exact same process as creating an image on the regular Wikivoyage. Also, if you want to get back to the regular wikivoyage site all you have to do is retype www.wikivoyage.org back into the browser's address bar.

Thanks! - (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 02:04, 7 June 2006 (EDT)

I just realized that people talk back on their own pages for other people to read in the future. Since I saw this suggestion, I have been putting my images in the shared site. It's painless but it does make me wonder why Wikivoyage has an upload link at all, rather than a link to upload to the shared site. Regardless, I'm sure someone else is interested in thinking about so I'll leave it for them. (WT-en) Johnycanal 13:02, 03 July 2006 (PST)

Quickbars for states/provinces

edit

There has been some discussion about whether quickbars should be used for states/provinces (see Template talk:Quickbar#Quickbar for States for one such discussion) and while a final decision wasn't really reached I think the general feeling was that quickbars are currently really only appropriate for countries, and that we'll need to modify the template if it's going to be useful for states/provinces/cities. As a result I've reverted the quickbar for Ontario, although if you feel strongly please discuss at Template talk:Quickbar. -- (WT-en) Ryan 21:08, 27 July 2006 (EDT)

Looks like several of the Canadian provinces now have quickbars, so I've added it back to Ontario. I think if we're going to use these for levels smaller than countries we might want to re-work the template to be slightly more appropriate, but I don't feel overly strongly on the subject. -- (WT-en) Ryan 21:15, 27 July 2006 (EDT)
Thanks. I don't have a strong feeling on the subject either and can't articulate much beyond somehow it looks appropriate and I like it. (WT-en) Johnycanal 21:19, 27 July 2006 (EDT)

Philippines

edit

Thanks for restoring the non-copyvio images to the Philippines. It's unusual for us to have so many copyvios uploaded without anyone catching it for such a long time, which made the cleanup job more difficult. -- (WT-en) Ryan 14:49, 22 August 2006 (EDT)

No problem on the pictures. I had been watching the page for a while to see when the (likely) copyrighted pictures would be removed. I was happy to replace them. Hopefully it will inspire a few more people to put up their masterpieces. (WT-en) Johnycanal 11:45, 24 August 2006 (EDT)

Spas?

edit

Hi, Johnycanal. I'm writing to you as the "expert" on Hot springs and Spas. I'm wondering if Saratoga Springs or Calistoga deserve a listing on either. Saratoga looks like a spa to me, but I believe the Calistoga area has a geyser and so is hot springs?? (WT-en) OldPine 07:00, 22 September 2006 (EDT)

May I jump in here? The so-called "geyser" at Calistoga isn't a natural feature but rather a drilled well that erupts (T. S. Bryan, "The Geysers of Yellowstone," the standard reference on not just Yellowstone's geysers but the world's), and does not necessarily imply the presence of hot springs. However, according to Wikipedia, there really are hot springs there too. Of course you can't always trust Wikipedia about such things, but the preponderance of evidence suggests that this one is correct. Lots of hot springs in California need to be added to the article; please feel free. As for Saratoga, this article asserts that New York has no natural hot springs, so that what's there should be called a spa. This is consistent with the geological setting. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 09:53, 22 September 2006 (EDT)
Nice explanation (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill. That's enough for me. — (WT-en) Johnycanal 15:30, 24 September 2006 (EDT)

About the map of Playa del Carmen (II part)

edit

Hi Johnycanal,

I have found in Wikivoyage a link to a site that have a navigable map of Playa del Carmen. I have seen that you have deleted it because for you it was an external marketing map. My opinion is that the map is absolute free and it can be useful for all other users that need to know or to visit Playa del Carmen. Please take a look to the site and you will see that they offer a good directory to find what you need in Playa del Carmen and how to find a specific address. I have tried for a long time to find a good navigable map of Playa, but without success. Everybody can see easly that in the page of Playa del Carmen there are other real external link of commercial sites, with the only purpose to sell and not to give information about the city.

This is only my opinion. What do you think about this?

Regards, Carolfab

Hi (WT-en) Carolfab, thanks for the note and I agree, it is usually pretty tough to find a good map of travel destination. It's frustrating and it's a challenge with Wikivoyage. As for why I took it out, check out. Hopefully that will answer your question better than I could. External links. (WT-en) Johnycanal 00:09, 29 September 2006 (EDT)

Hi Johnycanal,

I have read your answer and I didn't really understand what you are agree with me. What I wanted to say, is that for my opinion the link to that site was ok and usefull for the comunity. When I spoke about real external link of commercial sites, I mean other links that are actually inserted in the page of Playa del Carmen in Wikivoyage. (Ah-Cacao, Xel-Ha) They really sell services and they promote their product. I don't think that it is useful for the comunity to know their site because they don't give any informations about the thema "Playa del Carmen". I think it would be ok to write the name but without any external links. In this case I can say that I'm agree with you. But regarding that map I'm sorry but I'm not agree. In the site that you have deleted, you can see information about Playa, a complete map and a directory to find hotels, restaurants and much more.

I think that we should really check what it is commercial from what can offer something good and usefull to the comunity. I have checked again that external site (deleted from you) and I have seen that it is all free and gives the opportunity to everybody to sign up without any cost. The links in the pages are linked to the directory of the portal, or to the map of Playa del Carmen or to the legitimate website. The portal doesn't sell any tours, any hotel or trip packages. It gives information about the city and where to find what a tourist or a local can need to find.

I find the map very good and for my opinion should be added to the article of Playa del Carmen in Wikivoyage.

I hope to receive any comments from you.

Regards, Carolfab

Carolfab -- I can see how you are a little confused. It looks like the link didn't come through. Allow me to cut and paste a few excerpts taken from here: Wikivoyage_talk:External_links "This guide is meant as a travel guide, not a link farm. We need info here for many reasons: first, we want to make a complete and usable printable travel guide. A link is useless in print, so it's better to incorporate real information here rather than link to it. Second (and related), when you link to vital info, there is a temptation to fail to include complete info here." and here: Project:External_links "Avoid linking to secondary sources. For example, avoid using links to: ... Map services" and "We should have travel information in Wikivoyage, not linked to from Wikivoyage. This is an incentive issue; if we have lots of links to other travel guides, we lose the impetus to create our own. In addition, many users print copies of Wikivoyage articles, and therefore need information to be within the article rather than linked to at another site." I hope this helps. Rai Leh

edit

Sorry about the Rai Leh thing: I meant to revert only this edit (the ":*" thing is weird and unnecessary, plain old "*" is fine), but the software went and reverted your older edits too. My apologies. (WT-en) Jpatokal 05:36, 24 February 2007 (EST)

Hey, there's this awesome photo that you uploaded to Shared, but there's no license information or author attribution. Could you tell us who created the license/owns the copyright and under which license(s) it's licensed? Thanks. -- (WT-en) Sapphire(Talk) • 07:06, 28 March 2007 (EDT)

I took the picture. I'll change that. I thought that I specified it when I uploaded it or at least that all contributions to Wikivoyage Shared are considered to be released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 1.0. (WT-en) Johnycanal 21:35, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
I'll second that! GREAT photos, but please select licenses for them! You can go to "my contributions" when you're logged in to Shared, then just go to each photo and select ccbysa 1.0. Thanks a lot! I love the Moray Eel one in Sabang, so crisp and beautiful color. – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 17:18, 20 April 2007 (EDT)
