Thanks alot for the pictures. Comerica Tower is the first listing under the architecture section in the downtown article, but under the name "One Detroit Center" because that is the actual name of the building. Edmonton

Well, before I'd read about Edmonton, I would never have thought twice about the city. But its got a lot of cool places like the largest mall in North America, nice architecture, and it seems like its growing into a global city. It has a lot of potential. Wow you got bang on with a lot of stuff. although a lot of the neat architecture is in styles people don't care for, with the exception of the 80s buildings. Edmonton is a clean city, although like every other city there are dirrtty parts. You are right it does have a lot of potential, and it is growing into a global city, although you wouldn't get that from the first night you were here. Yeah, it has a lot of cool places. Well if you ever go to the city, until the new arena is built, dont just go to see a hockey game or something at Rexall (current arena) as all you will really see is the ugly suburbia and grit. Not a good impression, one reason why there is plans for a new one downtown (right now in East Central/Central border). I am glad you have taken an interest in it. What kinds of architectural styles do yuo like? If you tell, I can tell you if the architecture in Edmonton would be neat for you. Hey, this is turining into a neat conversation. Also, we're forgetting Detroit! Okay, I have a question about Detroit: Why did the Renaissance building get built? That thing killed the downtown and left parking lots on the lake shore. Actually, I don't really like hockey and I hate the suburbs too. I like all kinds of architecture, especially styles used heavily in the 1920s like Art Deco, which we have a lot of in Detroit. However, I don't like the Chicago-style. As for the Ren Cen, it was built by the Detroit Renaissance Organization to stop the white flight to the suburbs. This was after the 1967 riots, and the Ren Cen was unsuccesful in its mission as Detroit today has half the population it had in the 1950s. General Motors moved its headquarters to the building in 1997 and finished renovating it in 2004. They did a great job. But, you are right about the parking lots, if you look at the view of the city from the Ren Cen you'll see a bunch of parking lots next to the Ren Cen and it looks horrible. But many lofts and apartments are replacing those and the riverfront should be finished in a little. --(WT-en) Local hero 19:19, 26 November 2008 (EST)

It's really neat conversing with you. Well there is a very small amount of Art Deco. What do you mean about Chicago? I hate hockey too, hah, well I don't mind playing sometimes. Suburbs are very disgusting (unless they are inner urban ones). Yeah RenCen was unsuccessful, and despite good comments about it, well, it looks exactly like the Peachtree Westin down in Georgia! Not to mention it destroyed a Historical neighbourhood. Well if your wonderin how I know this stuff about Detroit there is this neat book Cities: Back from the edge and it talks about how RenCen destroyed downtown. For architectural styles, as said in Edmonton articles-you will mostly see Utilitarian, Brutalist, 1980s (that look a lot more modern), and recent development in modern. Although, there is a fair amount of 1910s architecture due to a boom back then. If you feel like, go in Central Edmonton and under architecture, see the pics of the buildings. By Chicago I mean buildings such as the Sears Tower, I think it looks ugly. The Ren Cen was designed by the same guy who did the Peachtree, but the Ren Cen is about one meter taller. I didn't know the building was built on an historic neighborhood. Do you know the name of it? I checked out the Central Edmonton and the Alberta Legislature building looks really nice. So do the Manulife Place, the Commerce Place, and the Beautiful Canada Place building. I read on Wikipedia that buildings in Edmonton can't be taller than 150 m, that kinda sucks. When I visit a city, I do not usually visit museums unless they are well-known. I also do not go for shopping either, but if I go to Edmonton I would have to visit the largest mall in North America. Ah that's what you meant. Because that could mean it's historicaltecture or Sears Tower,etc. I don't believe i know the neighbourhood-idk. Buildings cannot be taller because of City Centre Airport. But depending on the area it can be between 80 m and 150 m. Although there are plans to close the airport aas it is underused and most people use the Int'l. Where is a picture of Manulife place on Wikivoyage outside skyline and 1 aerial view? Commerce Place is really nice. So is Canada, but it destroyed a Histroic gem, although it was destroyed piece by piece so it can be rebuilt. Commerce and Manu surely don't look fro mthe 80s, eh//>? Oh boy, if you are going to be shopping in Edmonton if you go, please, please, please, please, don't just do West Ed. One thing, a part of it's hype is there is a lot of AMERICAN chains that arent prominent in Canada thatre there, which gets attejntion from Canadians. If you want a truely unique shopping area, Whyte ave on a sat afternoon is best. If you like up and coming areas 124 st and 104 st would be okay. If you like High end stores, try Manulife Place. Parks, eh? Well you are in luck with the largest parkland system in North america there is a lot of trails, sports and just plain parks in Edmonton. Theyre really cool. Monuments? Character neighbourhoods are listed in the article. Its tough to say which has most history and character-it is between Oliver, Downtown (all kinds of skyscrapers, parks, attractions, stuff to do, history, and even a few houses), and Old Strathcona. If you do not mind grit and somewhat crime, Boyle has the most history. The city is famous for festivals, and even if you arent a festival person, check one out you will change your mind. Best time is summer for the events. Some are quite unique. Definitely: Taste of Edmonton, Fringe Fest, Dragonboat fest, Works art&design, and Edmonton Gay Pride are the best. Oh and Heritage Days. There is also good skiing and golfing iof your into that. You should also try going to at least 1 independant theatre and 1 large theatre in the inner city for plays and indie-issh films. They're quite cool. Other than that, the science centre, Fort Ed, and Muttart are really coool. If your interested in skyline views, Gallagher Park or High Level Bridge are the best. I saw a picture of the Manulife Building on Wikipedia. I like outdoor shopping much better than going to malls, so Whyte Avenue sounds really cool. But, I still can't go to Edmonton and not see the mall. Although I do like high-end stores, I don't like high-end spending. Living in the D, you can't mind crime so I would definately visit Boyle cuz I am a history buff. All those festivals sound great, except for the gay pride one (I'm a Republican ;). Gallagher Park seems like a place I would spend a lot of time in because I love skyline views. Edmonton is definately going on the list of places I have to see before I die. oh lol. i am gonna get some better architecture pics. Yeah whyte ave is a hit, but at night its a little coocoo. Manulife might be worth a visit just to look. what do you think of 124 and 104 st? I also here it has a lotta theatre action, is that true? You'll have to pardon Edmonton during winter, as there isn't nearly as much festivals or people out and about, but there is still stuff to do. Edmonton doesn't have the vibrancy of NY or TO, but it is quite good for it's size/situation and only growing. Give it 10 years and it will be bustling year round. Even now is good though. Like I said, I like outdoor shopping so 124 and 104 streets would be cool too. The Dragonboat Fest seems interesting just by the name. Contrary to what I said above, the gay pride one sounds intriguing because we don't have anything like that in my neck-of-the-woods. Unless you have to be gay to go? The best building in Detroit, in my opinion, is the Guardian Building. In addition to the great architecture, it has an amazing interior. Detroit does have the largest theatre district in America outside of Broadway in NYC. The best is undoubtedly the Fox Theatre. If I visit Edmonton, it will be after a few years at the earliest, so by then Edmonton will probably have grown a lot. I like the first picture of the Central article. I also like the one of the Suite Hotel and Chateau Lacombe, the sunrise in Edmonton, and I love the first picture on the Edmonton page. Hay! Dragonboat is quite cool. You get to watch Chinese dragonboats do a race in the river. You don't need to be gay to go to the gay pride, it's more of a parade. Oh in 3yrs Edmonton is expected to have 790,000 city (752,000 now) and 1,145,000 metro (1,105,000 now). Thanksgiving in Canada is on the second monday in October. Is there anything else you find interesting of Eddy? Also, is there anything you'd find very interesting to see a photograph of? I really like the Greektown Casino u/c. It's kinna cool that DT is like a casino capital smaller yet very good like Al City and LV. Edmonton has 2 main theatre areas, and by far one of the best in Western canada. if you like science we have an awesome science centre. Youd also like High Level Bridge. It's three things 1) Really neat bridge , 2) Historic 3) Amazing skyline views.  :). Cariwest in August would be cool too, its a Carribean Parade. If you like farmers markets' Old Strathcona and City Market would be the best. You can try free samples and everything! Not to mention, it isnt just food. If you like food, you'd like Taste of Edmonton and Hertiage Days. They are both really cool and you can try all kinds of neat things you'd never try before. My biggest fear of people travelling to Edmonton is it not living up to the hype, which really shouldn't be the case, but you worry when you love a city. IMO-there is much more to do than Calgary, uts just the little stuff Calgary has it advertises well. I wish Detroit was growing in population as much as Edmonton. Because of the trouble in the auto industry, people are moving to the southwest. Do Edmontonians and Calgarians get along? About how long does it take to get from Edmonton to Calgary (driving)? I would like to see a picture of the High Level Bridge, I'm not sure if there is already one on WikiTravel. The reason Detroit has casinos is because Windsor built one and got a lot of tourists, so Detroit built some to compete. The casinos bring a lot of revenue, which Detroit needs since our last mayor spent millions of taxpayers' money. I was never much of a theatre fan, but I do like science centers. Detroit has a great one too. I am not getting bored with this, its actually pretty interesting. As for food, I am very picky and tend to like my classic American hamburgers and hot dogs. Well, Edmonton isn't growing as much as it was. It just got out of a boom, but, even though people were jelly over Calgary getting more projects, but now we're like HAH as we aren't having projects cancelling and a lotta people leaving. We are much more stable. Oh, hun, don't even get me started on Cgy-Edm rivalry! Of course, I don't believe it. It all originated with the NHL-Calgary had a team, Edmonton had a team. Then when they played against each other it was BATTLE OF ALBERTA, and got people a rush . Then they started booing each other's city. Then, in the 80s when the major oil offices moved to Calgary and it's population surpassed Edmontons, we got a inferiority complex and are so jealous of Calgary, but Calgary is the same. Now each city, not necessarily hates, but takes pleasure in making fun of each other. Of course there is a lot of people who think it is silly or just don't care. Calgary to Edmonton is 3 hours, but you'll want to stop in Red Deer for food & gas, So 3 and a half hours. There isn't a High Level images on WT, although it isn't the most beautiful thing, it is historic and gets it's beauty through that. I'lla try and get a picture this weekend - we'll see. You seem to have strong interest in pre-War buildings. While Edmonton doesn't have too too much of that, Macleod Bay, Fairmont Hotel MacDonald, Boardwalk Building, Canadian Permanent Bank (the bank is defunct), Union Bank Inn are particular buildings that stand out. But if you go anywhere in the warehouse district or Boyle you'll see a bunch. You also like modern tecture, which like I said the 80s buildings look a lot more modern unlike ones from other places. Also we got some new stuff u/c. The new art gallery's gonna be done next year, which has a kind of Walt Dis Concert Hall look to it, very very modern. If you like brutalist/utilitarian (1947-1975) we have a ton of that because as oil was of shortage, we had a bunch and grew crazy. Our economy is much more diverse now. I have heard people who don't like plays and stuff of that type come to Edmonton and just go to one and like it (not like crazy, but like it). The Citadel or a small theatre would be cool. Hmm...anything else you'd find interesting to have a pic of? Anything you'd like to learn of Edmonton (or Calg, Alberta, Van, or Western Canada-I will try mah best)? Back to Detroit, so sad the city couldnt jus let Windsor have it. Ah well, at least you guys arent in the poopie financially. In your opinion-what is the biggest success and biggest flaw of Detroit? Also, if you'd go to Whyte Avenue, you'd mind as well go to 104 St (not the same one as the one downtown) just a block north between Whyte and 83 Avenue as it has some stylish clothing stores at medium prices (indie, hip hop, skater, urban, scene - basically young styles). If you like books, the best one is Audrey's downtown on 107 St and Jasper and has the best architecture section by far. I know you dont' like shopping much, but shopping is one of Edmonton's best, so, what type of stuff do you like to shop for? Then I can tell you the best ones (guarantee Whyte ave and west ed would still be on your list). By the way, Whyte Avenue is in Old Strathcona, south of the river, not downtown, in case you didn't know. Where's the best urban shopping in detroit? Sure, I like random shots. I have a question about Edmonton: does it have any subway, elevated rail, or something of that sort? About Detroit, its biggest success would be all the renovation projects of its historic buildings. While we haven't seen many new construction projects, we have seen several renovations of older buildings like the Book Cadillac. The biggest flaws are its leaders. Back to Edmonton, I'm not much of a reader, but I would visit Audrey's if the architecture is worth seeing. I don't go shopping for a specific reason, I just browse and see what I like. Detroit has no malls, but Campus Martius Park has some nice stores. --(WT-en) Local hero 00:22, November 2008 (EST)

Edmonton has a lot of malls because unlike Americ Cities the suburbs are within city limits (mostly). Well sees that you didn't read much of the Edmonton article-for transit there is a bus network and a fast growing LRT. There is also a trolley. Audrye's not only has a nice architecture book selectoin but its in this charming old building. If/when ya come to the city, you'd probably get a sense that it isn't "there" yet but it's up and coming. (WT-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] ^.T.A.L.K. 00:27, 28 November 2008 (EST).

Heh, I will admit, a year ago I did hate Detroit. But back then I didn't know much about the city, besides people's perception. Over the past little while, I have started learning more about Detroit (and Ohio cities) and I was astounded about Detroits crime (in that it being low) and that it's downtown is really coming back to life. It is truely fascinating a city-The Paris of America-hehe. I have a question for you, how do you keep up with all that editing over time? ?It sure does seem like a lot of work ;), and I am wondering because I am doing this with Edmonton, and it is abit overwhelming. There are two things that make me edit a lot. One is that I basically have no life. Another is that Detroit is my hometown and I want to try to do my part to get rid of its bad image. WikiTravel is very addicting, so most of the time I don't even realize how much time has passed. Digital cams-you can get one for cheap!!!!! Yes it is lacking! Uploading is easy, go to Wikivoyage Shared and upload it from there. Just fill in everything properly. Yes Edmonton does have pretty good maps, but the flattery you should give to User:(WT-en) PerryPlanet and User:(WT-en) Shaund as I gave them ALL the information and then they put it to the map (even though, particularily Shaund, knows some about Ed)! But yeah! Maybe consult Perry for a downtown map of Det or something, but I wouldn't ask for too many! Keep smiling, (WT-en) ee ^talk 21:53, 14 November 2008 (EST).

WAIT! Perry usually only does in city maps like of a district, neighbourhood or a transportation map of the city. You've got Downtown and the Midtown-New Center right. Southwest Detroit extends from downtown all the way down to Dearborn and Melvindale, along the river. The only thing wrong with the East Side is that you forgot Belle Isle. Northwest Detroit extends from Highland Park to the border with Redfrod Township. Hamtramck-Highland Park is just those two cities. Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this. Midtown-New Center is bounded by I-75 to the east, M-10 to the west, I-94 to the south, and Highland Park to the north. The East Side doesn't have any strict boundaries, but for the map's sake just make it everything south of I-94 and east of I-75 (including Belle Isle). The Southwest Side is everything south of Michigan Avenue and west of M-10. The Northwest Side is bordered to the north by 8 Mile, to the east by Woodward Avenue and Highland Park, to the west by the city of Redford. For the southern border of the Northwest Side, use I-96 but it eventually goes toward downtown, so just pretend that I-96 keeps going east into southern Highland Park, instead of going south onto West Grand, and use that as the southern border. I messed up on the southern border of Midtown-New Center; its I-75, not I-96. Sorry. As for the other dark areas, there isn't much to do or see in those parts of the city. But I could probably find some hidden gems even I don't know about. So extend the East Side to include the huge dark spot east of Woodward and north of I-94. Make the last dark spot West Side. Hey, I merged the two districts on the map (although it might take a refresh to see that). Regarding that warningbox discussion, the other user is clearly being provocative and insulting towards you, but I would encourage you not to respond regardless. Best not to be drawn into unproductive tit-for-tats, and I'm happy to moderate (and revert) any extreme edits. Hopefully something productive will come of this, and I think some useful (rather than "scare-people-off") stay safe sections in districts would be useful. Even in the very safe areas, stay safe information can be very useful in assuaging unwarranted fears. Thanks. For the main page to be a guide all the districts need to be usable, so make sure that is there first then bring it up to guide. Then please nominate it, it would be a great choice for DOTM. I recently nominated Portland (OR) which I also think would be great a DOTM (just needs some more photos), so many great articles here on WT. The downtown district is a guide and Midtown-New Center is usable, but the other four are all outlines. The East Side seems pretty close to usable status, and the Southwest Side isn't bad either.
